Treasure Map

Several critters in game keep offering me a treasure map to buy but it costs 300. Is this something I should be buying? I keep telling them no. Also is a treasure map different from the regular map I have or the same thing?

treasure maps show you locations of buried treasure around the different islands, and yes we all think they are a little expensive, When you buy a treasure map and look at it, it will show yo the general location to look for the treasure, and when you go looking in that area a yellow arrow will point to the ground where that treasure is buried.
As for whats in the treasure chests, some times it a rare decor item, but frequently it is a clothing or or home decoration like wallpaper. Whether or not you choose to buy them is up to you and makes little difference in the game but it gives you something else to look for when salvaging,

NPC are trying to scam us a lot. It is weird how we have to forage everything, build all the crafting machinces, all the building and houses, buy stuff from mayor and other trader and in the end we get nothing xD Then NPC comes saying 'oh, there is that little squirrel with map in the bottle, but i don't trust squirrels, so buy that dirty suspicious map for 300 gold? Or i get upset!'.

But, for some reason random quests from the board giving 200-300 coins while actual reward stating 20-30, either bug or due to high relationships. In that case it might be beneficial to atleast buy random trash from them for few coins.

the pay your receive for board quests is multiplied the more hearts the townie has for you
