How do you use the lures in this game?

As posted above, I have the lures in my inventory and have the basic fishing pole. I'm just not sure how it works. I tried right clicking and there's an icon that looks like a fish so I click on it but I don't see if the lure it attached or anything. I know they are consumable but they aren't going away. What am I missing? I tried a search of the discussion boards but the filter just brings up any time someone mentions fish. Which is a great many times.

Oh, you just pull them up in the inventory and click on them when you have your rod selected. You'll see an icon on the right side that will alternate between an X and a hook.

When you cast, you'll know the lure has been used because it replaces the default cork-and-a-flag in the water.
