Disciples II: Rise of the Elves

Disciples II: Rise of the Elves

Cannot Run
Whenever I boot up this game, the screen goes black and I have to hit ctrl-alt-del to stop the program? I am running Windows 7 and would really like to play this game. Any help?

I have the same problem. I've tried various things on the other steam forums regarding Configuration Editor and compatibility mode, but as far as I can tell, none of it works. I even tried removing UAC like I was told. It ran ONCE. Then I adjusted the volume and it froze instantly. If I try running it directly from steamapps folder, it gives me a Cannot Initialize Error. I am also using Windows 7. Also, there doesn't seem to be an option to alter compatibility mode under RightClick->Properties->Compatibility on the Discipl2.exe

*UPDATE* I did manage to run it in Windows XP Service Pack 2. New problem, however. Now it says it cannot initialize yet again.

I had the same problems. Not able to run it more than a few times (randomly). My solution was assigning it to one CPU. All of my problems disappeared and I can run it witout compatibility settings and in any solution. Give it a try:

This solution works for Gallean's Return and Rise of the Elves:

1. Just download easytoolz and start it (it's free).

2. A tray icon appears. Right-click the tray icon and choose - CPU Affinity.

3. Add Discipl2.exe (in Gallean's Return or Rise of the Elves folder - depending on your game) and click CPU - choose only CPU 0 - disable all other CPUs.

Start configuration editor and select whatever you wish (every possible selection runs after disabling the other CPUs).

Play and enjoy the game.

Could you link me to easytoolz? There's a lot of freewares called easytoolz floating around, and all I can find are 3D modelling and audio-editing programs, nothing to alter CPU usage. =/

Okay, did it. I still get the "Cannot Initialize Disciples: II" error =/

This is the URL:

2 important things I forgot to mention:

1. You have to start easytoolz everytime before you start the game (it's no installation - you just start the exe and the tray icon appears). And make sure you have only CPU 0 assigned to the discpl2.exe (for both games). Check it in the tray icon > CPU Affinity.

2. Uncheck "windowed mode". It only works full-screen (I play in 1280*1024, 60hz).

This works 100 % for me. Everything else didn't work (compatibility mode, 16 bit, d3d, UAC, 256 colors, visual designs...).

Hope this helps.

Where do I find discipl2.exe?

The path is:
program files (or program files x86 if you run a 64bit OS) > steam > steamapps > common > disciples II galleans return / disciples II rise of the elves.
