I just dont get elves
How are you supposed to play this race? Most of units looks rather subpar compared to other races. Armored centaurs looked good but no freaking armor growth kills them(just why? Frraking gargoyle has armor growth! And she barely need it in the first place!), mages are... Ok. Clerics are ok, maaaybe a bit better then empire one, but not much. Archer are good, especially sentry but not "killer" unit. I think several years back when I played first time on retail versionI ran through elves with two griffins, dryad and heal. But compared to other 2 slot unit it just looks unimpressive compared to something like Onyx Gargoyle or undead dragons. Better then titan though

Am I not getting something?

They have the best Ini so you are supposed to make use of that. go full offensive stack 3 archers/hero/cent or 2(1) archers/1(2)mage. A defending griffin in the middle sounds like a nice idea, but don't do it, go all in

The way to lvl up is pressing defence as your high-ini melee hero and attacking with your strong backline until hero is ready to deal the killing blow

Don't forget to have some elemental damage in your party

Archers are the best in the game. Locked Centaur Lancers are decent. Theurgists are pretty good. Do not use melee hero. Griffins are decent. Centaurs not having armor growth is unfortunate but it does not kill the unit. Centaur Savages can be useful. Elven healers are very nice. Grovemaidens are terrifying against the Undead.
