Legions- Boring but Effective?
Legions are the most boring faction. You have lots of damaging units but many overlap. The Devil line is so boring until much later on. The Baroness is pretty cool, but hard to master. The Fiend's Poison does not seem to work well, or maybe I am not measuring it right. The Possessed line is boring. Always using Incubi is boring. I can go on.

However, the faction is still very effective. It is very good in PvP. It has great damaging spells. Its heroes are no less effective that anyone else's and the Duke is better than the Forest Liege. The Gargoyle is a great unit and actually fun. The Infernal Knight is a great unit. The Witch really is a good unit. Locked Cultists are boring but very effective. Overlords are great but hard to get.
It is disappointing how boring this faction usually is, but it is far from ineffective.

I also think that while it is in fact an advanced faction and not for beginners, it might not even be the hardest faction to master. The Undead Hordes and the Mountain Clans both could be viewed as harder. The Undead have no single-target ranged base unit or hero at all and you have to give up your elite aoe ranged options in order to get Wraiths, Deaths, or Wights, your single-target ranged options. The Mountain Clans have no aoe base unit, but do have an aoe hero. The low Initiative is a challenge.

Honestly, the Legions are boring, very effective and of third-most difficulty of the factions. It is my least favorite faction most days, but Gargoyles are one of favorite base units.

Baroness sucks 90% of the time, especially while leveling up. I think she is basically just good as a supporting hero, so if you put a tanky warrior with her, she can scare off the enemies and just waste their time if they try to attack her. Doesn't work against empire though.

I never thought about AoE with undeads and clans! This seems quite intentional to balance the races in this way. Mountain Clans have many ways to get AoE later on though, almost every unit can! Warriors can become mountaineers, crossbowmen can become flame casters and Rock giants can become Tempest giants, which is one of my favorite thing in single player games. Just starting up with a strong single-target army, but progressing into a full AoE army which just destroys everything.

How and where do you play PvP, I must ask?

Fiend grow pretty fast though. It is better then imp line prior to Overlord/Tiamat but gargoyles are just insane.

Main demon problem in my opinion is that they just too predictable. Dew to gargoyle dominance it is most likely that demons party will be 2 gargs+mage hero+incubus/succubus. And most likely it will be incubus dew to mind immunities are kinda not that rare at least compared to earth one
