whats the deal with this game?

this game is very fun, its a simple concept wonderfully executed, but it is a bit puzzling

1 there is no kind of monetization, even if you wanted to give the devs money you couldnt

2 having to direct connect through a code instead of a lobby browser is awful

was this game a student project or something and they decided to release it to the public because it was cool, or whats the deal here?
