The game can be saved at any time, including your position, and you may have multiple profiles("careers") in the game as well.
Currently, you do drop stuff when you die, but this sounds like an excellent option to add for players to tailor their experience. I just had a quick chat with our programmers and this would probably be trivial to add as a toggle-able option. We even have a score multiplier that we can use to 'balance' it, for those who care about that sort of thing.
This won't be available at launch, but I'll let you if it makes it into the game! :)
btw, by multiple slots I meant within the same profile or career, but it might not be necessary, I just like to keep saves from various stages of games (each chapter or location, before a decision, etc.).
I got a small correction about the earlier answer though, the tech guys caught me! ;D
We don't save your exact position, we spawn you in the nearest "safe" location. It's never far off from where you were though, so no need to worry about losing progression or such :)
