Fang can show up really early, and turn the tide of a game. In terms of impact at the point where he shows up, he has my vote.
If we're talking late game heroes, Roland is great. That first strike and magic immunity makes him terrifying. Warrax is definitely up there in the top few. I also love Malleus if he shows up when I don't have Flame Strike myself, yet.
Also, someone in the Discord already has a pack of custom heroes that you can add in. If you're looking for more variety!
Where is this mod posted?
Ah, okay; I am philosophically opposed to entering Discord again ;(
You can also find a few at Nexusmods (including the hero pack that was mentioned).
Mortu has magic immunity like Torin and Roland and Ravashack has a Life-stealing ranged attack like the demon lord to compliment his substantial mana pool by Super Hero and Demigod ranks.
I mean, there are quite a few ways to look at it.
Early on, I'd say I'm most happy to see Theria as a starting hero, because she become indestructible so fast.
Malleus is a huge game changer and maybe my favorite hero to have overall, unless I'm playing Chaos of course.
As has been said, Fang is probably the best overall hero, in terms of utility and when you can get him.
But Shalla is also extremely good. The nice thing about Fang and Shalla is they can both hit flying units, and Fang still can even when webbed due to fire breath.
For Champions, I honestly usually prefer to Elana over all the rest, but Roland is very good too. I mean having a strong Healer with high mobility is always good. Warrax is good, but usually by the time I have Warrax the game is over anyway.
In terms of "game changers" I'd say Fang, Shalla, Theria, and Malleus are the buiggest game changers. Serena and Jaer get honorable mention.
Oh, I forgot about the new heroes though. The new Troll hero, I forget his name, is also very good, but probably just a step behind Fang but before Shalla.
BUt i really usually go for warrax, then i use him, alone, to conquer everything.
I mean Shin Bo often does really well solo as well because Invisibility makes essentially impossible to damage once he gets a lot of shields. But he really needs flight, as do Roland and Mortu.
But yeah, Warrax can do stuff like take down Great Drakes and Chaos Spawns pretty easily. I forget if he can take down Sky Drakes. He can take on Death Knights of course.
But I don't think I've ever played a single game where Warrax did anything meaningful for me. He just tends to come along way too late. Any Champions pretty much come along too late to matter. Torin can come sooner and is of course more reliable, but in the version of the game you can't cast Heroism on him, which is a bummer and he's not really that great as a solo hero. I mean he's good, but he's so much more effective as the leader of a full stack. And without First Strike or ranged he can't really solo stuff like Arch Angels or Great Drakes, etc.
Fang and Shalla are pretty solid though. Fang especially, since he has Flight. Of course you can get Flight or Water Walking fairly easily, but still, having it inherently is a big plus. When Fang gets the right defensive rolls he's brutal. But having Thrown with Shalla is also really strong. I've had her Thrown attack up in the 20+ range so when you're hitting the 20+ Thrown before you even melee, that lets you take on a lot of stuff, especially when you have mods like Death and Holy Avenger. For sure Fang and Shalla have done a lot more for me than Warrax, just because they come along so much sooner.
Jaer the Wind Mage is nice due to the mobility he confers on units he is stacked with.
But also a big fan of Warrax the Chaos Warrior.
