it doesn't matter, if you want stories and micro, you play this.
if you want combat, you play sins.
If anyone recalls BOTF, what that game would have mutated into today, would have started off similar to these space grand strategy games. Yes, it would look a lot different, since that game truly went with a TNG panel layout, one we continued when we worked on BOTF Supremacy (fan fiction) game, which I think you can still play.
Basic Factions, ship building, faction warfares, Diplomacy, Espionage, and this is much more in-depth. If you don't like those type of games: Endless Space 2, Galactic Civ 4, you want to put Dune in there now, Masters of Orion, Homeworld and many others, all start around the same templates.
How you create that UI and control panel, navigation, and how much depth you put into it will appeal to certain players, someone who pauses and does 500 things in a turn, to single section 1 piece at a time game play, to massive mech control turn base play (say Total War series), puzzle solving, and so on. You have to start somewhere and usually people who don't like something, its either too complex, too confusing, or simply lacking action. I remember when we were playing with the idea of assigning crews having key maneuvers added to those who rose to captain was a fun idea. For example, Making Riker as captain, would give you a Riker maneuver choice to your turn base combat.
Star Trek Online was a wonderful idea, just so many mistakes, where you actually felt part of the Federation, but it was so Federation heavy and rpg, that you kind of got tired of grinding, showing you that maybe playing in the actual Federation was more of a job, than a true adventure, but mmo's have slowly shifted into gacha formats and many are struggling, because the gamer doesn't want to be stuck in one gaming experience.
Star Trek also has appeared more in gacha formats, from Timelines, to Fleet Command where those experiences felt like you purchased clothes in a store and were tackled in the store and stripped. For me, raid type games or simply collecting illusionary portraits, don't quite fit the Star Trek format.
Star Trek Armada, and other RTS versions which were clones from old Starcraft and many other formatted games that was more fast building and outpacing the AI.
With Microprose's return, it would not surprise me if we saw a real BOTF 2. If they were able to retain the license again, they would have rights to that original creation.
For now, I want to see where this goes. I do think Stellaris players find this easier to play and that may not be a bad thing. I think there would have been complaints no matter what starting point or other grand strategy game they followed by. Would have liked to have seen a more creative endeavor from their concept artists, but maybe that was a Paradox condition. We will see, some great old Star Trek games, and I do think you will see other franchises jump into the grand strategy genre. Star Wars may not be far off.
There's literally 0 micro in this game. It's been dumbed down to the point that a blind, one armed monkey can play it while it's getting shaved.
Star Trek: Birth of the Federation.

I played so much of this back in 99-2000.
Well... that's clearly not going to happen...
found this link for the original, but not sure who this site is. For the original. Let me know if this works.

Needs AI work and some other things done, it was never a prefect game, but if they did a remake they could of addressed the issues.
