Don't be put off by the very long and (in my opinion) overly detailed installer instructions, it isn't complex to install. You can play original or with one of great mods. Personally I find Balance of Power more true to the original BotF, but many like the Ultimate Dominion Mod (that replaces Ferengi not Cardassians).
AI is still poor, but still a better experience and feels more Trek than STI. Putting aside the mods, the original devs of this clearly put more care and attention to make each of the five factions look and feel unique.
