battles
This does look very similar to Stellaris (not a bad thing) but are the battles just spinning balls of ships or is there more player input or at least more engaging fleet battle visuals?

I'd say pretty much the same but with phasers and torpedos.

I think at least fleets are smaller, but otherwise 1:1 Stellaris from what I saw in Streams

i would need more control of 3d battles like botf, i wouldn't like to play if its mostly auto battles, but that trailer more or less said let the captains do the fighting as you have more important things to do which is bull as the ship battles controlling is great fun for me in botf. I wouldn't trust ai to know which ship should go after which target, which tactic to use like strafe or circle, or tell ships to evade or maybe just flee if i want to save some ships.

This is why I will probably not purchase. I dont get these publishers that put all this work into space 4X titles but completely gloss over the battles. Gal Civ 4 is same thing. Wonderful global game design but battles are a complete afterthought.

The promise of "Grand Strategy" is really bad combat, not sure why these things seem to go hand in hand.

We need the people who made battlestar galactica deadlock, to make a star trek game.. would be amazing.

i posted something like this months ago as i dont mind it been exactly the same but would like either 1 - abit more imput on the battles, or 2 - the battles to look more engaging and cinematic, with way better explosions and physics for missiles and lasers, not just like you said a spinning ball of light shows that just looks like a disco ball of TRASH to witness.

There was a decent mod for stellaris that made it look better but sadly did not get updated

lol battles in botf may have been 3d but there was hardly any control in them

I'll take hardly any over none any day.

Yeah, in Stellaris your two tactical options are do you engage yes/no, do you retreat yes/no. When in combat it is ships spinning around pew pewing eachother until death or retreat, and vast majority of the time whoever has the biggest stack wins. Yawn.

This is also the thing I fear will be the same here in STI. Stellaris combat sucked in 2016 and hasn't been improved in all those years, so if in 2023 Nimble Giant have just copied this mechanic and done nothing to improve it, then that would be a terrible missed opportunity. I am really hoping i'm wrong, but given the lack of reviews and gameplay footage I await to see the feedback from players.

Just watched Montu's stream. It's pretty similar to Stellaris. Game looks fantastic, btw.

Ah man, this is a deal breaker. I'd rather have auto resolve than watch ships sitting still spewing fire. A real missed opportunity

Yeah, it would be a missed opportunity. Ship combat in TNG, and later DS9, was about tactics, and not just pew pewing pretty lights as you see in new Trek. The devs could have at least tried to add some tactical decisions in there.

I still (foolishly) hold out hope they have tried to do something innovative and fresh with STI, rather than copy and paste the mechanics from 2016, but all the signs are not.
