Terraforming
I don't have the game yet, really want it but can't get it yet, but just wanted to ask a quick question of can you terraform Mars?

I know you could in Stellaris. I haven't played UFP enough to take a gander at it

While you can terraform planets that are not habitable at start, they must have districts to begin with. Mars doesn't have districts, so it can't be terraformed.

if you get it early on, I just finish a Fed play though and I just got the Tech when I was only a few years away from winning.

It is very much not so.

Planet Habitability affects Pop Growth Speed and Stability. Stability directly affects resources output - so you can improve the two most important things a planet does: Producing pops and resources.

Considering that most of the class M planets you find don't have many districts - the Federation starts with Denobula and Risa in their territory that only have 7 and 9 districts for example - terraforming is an extremely powerfull tool to make planets habitable that otherwise wouldn't be. You can even terrafor Molton, Frozen and Tomb Worlds into M-class in several stages. A planet with 25 districts or more can support over 100 pops and produces a lot of resources - In my last playthrough I had one of those planets as a Forge World with 21 Industrial Districts; it produced half of my Empires total Alloys.

It's most interesting factor is supporting something that in Stellaris is called a "tall built" - empire development in a limited space. If you have a system with two or more somewhat habitable planets, you can create an economic powerhouse of a star system that you only need one Star Fortress to defend to - you don't have to spread out over multiple systems or construct expensive habitats.

The last advantage is, that you can correct the mistakes of minor AI powers after you integrated their planets, since you can terraform already inhabited planets with Advanced Terraforming. The AI often colonizes L or N-class planets with a low number of districts that don't really do anything. And since you can't just give up a planet, this is the best way to make them somewhat useful and not in need of constant support by a governor increasing stability or reducing crime.

Ultimately I found Terraforming to be a very powerful tool in the mid-game, before you get your stability and habitability techs in.

It is possible. Class "H" planet Mars has a modifier that allows it to be done, I cheated a bit and also added code so that class "Y" planets can also be terraformed to class "D".
terraform_link = { psc_from = "psc_class_y" psc_to = "psc_class_d" energy = 900000 duration = 36000 condition = { has_technology = "tech_advanced_terraforming" from = { is_under_colonization = no } } effect = { from = { change_pc = { class = rl_habitable_normal planet_subclass = psc_class_d } } } ai_weight = { weight = 0 } }
this change should be inserted into the file: ...\Star Trek Infinite\common\terraform\00_basic_terraform_links.txt

With the following modifier: terraforming_candidate, class "H" planets can be terraformed to class "D".

You need advanced terraforming to terraform mars from the research tree.

While I haven't colonize Mars myself, I can see in my game that I can colonize Mars after terraforming it. It has 13 districts, with limited types. You need to have highest terraforming tech researched.
