Levelling Up & Stats Questions
Question 1 - Is my understanding correct? (All numbers are examples)
Each level requires a certain amount of points. So to level up once, I need either:
1) 10 Points of STR
2) 5 Points of STR and 5 Points of DEX

Question 2 - Do items that increase stats increase the XP needed for that stat to level up?
For example, if my base STR is 10, but with an item, my STR is 20.
Does equipping the item make my STR take longer to level up?

1) Yes, you are correct
2) No, they don't. Your base stat value affects that, the more STR you have - the harder it will be to level it up. Using Edicts giving +30% to STR leveling for example - is a great way to control which stats you'd like to focus on.

There is a level cap. Once you hit that cap, no more levels, no more stats. So to do well in this game, you want to choose the stat that you will focus on. Because one super hard str attack will pass encounters vs having weak versions of every skill. Think of stats as workers. You want all your workers contributing rather than 2/3s of them sitting around and browsing youtube at work.

Some items just give points. Think of them like armor. You unequip, it goes away.

Some items give growth. That's very important to have as early as possible as it makes your focus more stronger. Growth items of course do nothing once you hit the level cap.

something important. Because every stat level up contributes to your "max level", ANY points in a stat that you aren't focusing on, or don't want, is effectively a "bad" stat. You're going for a pure sloot "receptacle" build? every point of strength is effectively "negative levels" in that it reduces the amount of (for example) energy/endurance you can get.

Thus, if you're playing on a harder difficulty, or with a tougher challenge run on, focusing on the stats you WANT is critically important. Want to play a dex/agi build? DO NOT use strength attacks so you don't gain strength levels. Don't kick people out of the bar if playing waitress. Keep your desires low so you don't gain endurance levels. Avoid using energy moves whenever possible. All so that you gain a minimum of xp in the stats you aren't focused on. It's a "learn by doing" system, and ALSO a "you have x number of skillups and no reset button" system, so to get a strong build, you need to only DO the things you want to do, and avoid doing anything else.

on low difficulties or with easy builds, it doesn't really matter. you can probably faceroll your way to success on secretary mode fairly easily with only a mediocre knowledge of the game. But if you're running "A Disappointment" challenge in prisoner mode? you'd better carefully ration every single skillup.

Those edicts and some accessories are super helpful for that. They can either increase the rate at which you gain a stat's xp, or reduce the rate at which you gain unwanted stat xp.
