They can also be triggered unintentionally by asphalt-to-dirt road changes, skids (if a move backwards card is drawn), and some enemy attacks that can move you backwards or forwards.
Stuff like that can get you straight up disqualified in named-competitor or boss battles.
I dunno if being able to choose to retreat or not is possible with the way some of the cards work. That said a noticeable warning that a retreat is imminent would be nice.
I just watched through the prologue again, I didn't see anything mentioning escapes, please tell me the timestamp of where it is shown in this tutorial you mentioned
Not the person you replied to, but the mechanic is explained at 25:56 of the vid you posted:
"Cowardly Escape
Number of vehicles you can escape from before being disqualified from the tournament. The limit is shown in the top left corner of the screen. Vehicles count towards the limit when they, or the player, move more than 3 spaces off the screen.
Beware! Some Battles are to the death, where escape is prohibited."
In the video above it explains escapes at 25:55. It was very easy to find by scanning the seek bar until the thumbnail showed an enemy moving off screen.
