What's the point of the Giant Drill?

It's more expensive then the regular drill, needs a much larger flat area, needs more then twice as much power (8 compared to 3), and all to just drill slightly faster, (gold taking 6 seconds instead of 8).

Am I missing something or is it just a downgrade?

It can dig to a greater depth, thus can be used to dig dirt, at least until you get the laser drill. Otherwise it's completely pointless.

covers a wider area, good for auto-mining quartz, stone, ice or deep vertical veins of resources. for faster harvesting of resource nodes multiple small drills or large amounts of mining drones are better.

4 smaller drills in a square is WAY better than the big drill.
Just put three solar panels on each drill and you are good to go.

I don't think I have ever used the big drill beyond the first time unlocking it.

Now you can mass remove dirt with Voxel tool the Giant drill is almost useless.
