What does the Engineer profession do?

I don't see any machines that need them to operate. I sent one out onto an asteroid, but they just stood at the connector. They are available to train as soon as scientists are, but seem to have no use?

You don't need them yet. All you need are the scientists for researching the tech tree. From my understanding they will be needed in a future update to the game.

Yep. I'm confused about this one also. I have one but he just stands around.
