Why does it cost a train just to upgrade +1 carriage to an existing train?

I want to upgrade an existing train but feel that it is better to just buy a new one since upgrading to an additional carriage basically cost the same train and one carriage more.

Anyone realise this? Or is it just me, adding a carriage to an existing train requires you to purchase for the existing engine and carsa as well

I, for one, haven't gotten the grasp of it yet, other than it appears train manipulation isn't like most other games where you send a train to the depot and add/subtract/change the consist and then send it back out.

I've noticed this too, and it feels wrong. For now it seems that trains are non-editable, and the upgrade feature is just a shortcut for deleting one train and buying another in its place. I hope this will be changed.
