Mines will damage any enemy ships that enter the sector, before combat is triggered. However many mines it takes to destroy the enemy ships will be destroyed, or all of the mines will be if they were incapable of destroying all the enemy ships. However if the enemy have mine sweepers, they will remove some or all of the mines before they detonate depending on how many mine sweepers they have. In SE4, mines ignore shields.
can you remember what is usually a good number of mines to deploy on a warp point?
like is it in the 50's or more like hundreds?
(and if the mines i have are enough to damage their ships but not destroy any, would those ships enter combat in a partially damaged state?) hopefully yes but not sure :)
If a mine doesn't destroy a ship, it can leave it damaged, and that damage will be present in combat if there are defending ships.
