Red Mask turned them against Bekatua and they killed him - only to discover that Bekatua's death had doomed the mansion to annihilation as Bekatua maintained the mansion's heart with his blood. Red Mask, of course, had other ideas. They regretted it - but before they could turn upon Red Mask he killed the manor's inhabitants himself, using their blood to feed the heart, and creating the OXTO mask. The bulk of the manor's inhabitants were resurrected as husks and servants to the Red Masks, and the OXTO mask is used to lure people in to fight in the manor - the insane amounts of blood produced by their battles through the mansion feeds the Heart, maintains the mansion, and maintains Red Mask's rule over it.
Despite us shooting Red Mask and destroying the Heart, the cycle seems to somehow continue - the OXTO mask seems to cause two supernatural compulsions - a person who has conquered the mansion cannot stop themselves from passing it along to a new candidate, and upon seeing the mask, the new candidate picks it up, allowing the situation in the mansion to continue.
