Am I playing this wrong?
I've played this game for 3 1/2 hours now and I love the style, the soundtrack and game feel but I don't feel any progression. Basically from the start I get to the second boss at best and that's where my runs end and it's getting frustrating by now. Should I invest more time into getting the new liquors? I got the ones that cost 1200 by now by buying one drink and giving the rest to the investment lady. Or should I actively look up builds and all that stuff? I usually like to get to the end by myself and prefer to not look up guides which is why I haven't done that yet.

Honestly, you don't need liquors to win. I've been playing without any liquors and still getting to the 4th boss fight pretty consistently. In this game I feel like skill plays a much bigger role than one might think at first, since you can kill everything with any gun if you play it correctly. If going fast isn't working then you can exploit the AI by breaking select doors and making their pathing predictable or shooting to draw attention. Definitely no need for guides IMO.

All excellent points.

I found it better to unlock more weapons instead of liquors. Then by talking to the nun, you can disable all the crappy weapons. This makes enemies more powerful, but also makes you more powerful.

Enemies can't open doors and are alerted by gunshots, so you can create choke points to funnel them through.

The best liquor in the game (in my opinion) Animal is available from the start, which heals you slightly whenever you deal damage. This is very useful against bosses.

The easiest way to progress is by racking up combos. Higher combos = more money = more liquors = easier game.

I can't remember if it's unlocked from the start but Chenrezig instantly doubles the DPS of any one handed weapon (all SMGs) which is incredibly powerful.
