I found it better to unlock more weapons instead of liquors. Then by talking to the nun, you can disable all the crappy weapons. This makes enemies more powerful, but also makes you more powerful.
Enemies can't open doors and are alerted by gunshots, so you can create choke points to funnel them through.
The best liquor in the game (in my opinion) Animal is available from the start, which heals you slightly whenever you deal damage. This is very useful against bosses.
The easiest way to progress is by racking up combos. Higher combos = more money = more liquors = easier game.
I can't remember if it's unlocked from the start but Chenrezig instantly doubles the DPS of any one handed weapon (all SMGs) which is incredibly powerful.
