No, the characters are not "nb", the translation made it up + proof

So what's up with the translation making up characters to be nonbinary?
I've heard the translators/devs were harassed by sjws on twitter to change the original translation but at this point it's just a fanfiction.

The literal translation would be : "Sha ming, how many times do I have to tell you I'm "han", I don't have a sex! And stop treating me like this!"

Note that "han" is a term in universe to refer to people who've had surgery to remove their sexual organs.

Now let's check the original translation on the switch version;

For some reason they totally cut out the bit about being "han" which is very bad but far from the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ the final steam version gave us.

How is this ok? That's totally wrong and disrespectul to the writters AND the readers. A translation should never make up stuff like this.
Please translators/devs, don't listen to twitter. They are a vocal minority that will not buy your game anyway and the ones who do will always have something to be mad about. People who do, in the other hand, deserve to have a faithful translation.



The whole debacle started because the translators translated the japanese prefix "han" literally giving us "pan". That's how it was said in the game at first. A character said that they were pan (meaning they're supposed to be sexless) and some talk ensued because the other characters were surprised he still had sexual organs.
People on twitter got mad because they wrongly assumed pan meant "pansexual" and complained that it was a gross misrepresentation of the character.

Pan was never meant to mean pansexual (meaning attracted to all genders), it was just a literal translation of the made up term han (in universe; sexless)
Later on, pan was changed to "nonbinary" to appease the twitter mob which makes no sense because as these people always scream "gender has nothing to do with sex".


Now for some feedback:
There is already a term for people removing their sexual organs! It's called "nullification" and I think that would have been the best term to use if you want to translate "han" in english. Instead of the stupid "I'm nonbinary" which brings you back to earth right away and breaks imersion, "I'm null" would sound both very intriguing and amazing in the sci-fi context. It sounds cold, mysterious and it just sounds cool!

It's a weird choice because it changes dynamics a little. Non-binary I assume still leaves options for that type of romance. And han almost doesn't. I wonder if the retaliation scene is tweaked where Setsu says we're lovers too. But I'm not gonna grind again for that stupid skill just to check.

Personally I find it weird that Comet's supposed age is hidden too. I wonder if there're other changes. But what can you do. As they say, go learn Japanese and then finish your VN.

Null does sound cool.

Being nonbinary and being sexless are completely different things.

They've made changes to raqio and setsu for sure. Made up sha-ming to be much more of a predator too. If I remember well they did keep the part about setsu you mentioned which makes no sense again since setsu's "I'm nonbibary!" was a answer to sha-ming asking for a kiss in japanese. As you said, han implies they're not into romance and sex, nonbinary does not.

It's not so hard to change some lines in a Unity game. If you want to be the warrior of justice, then make the correct version or cope harder with imaginary problems.

I think the issue many people have is that the translation is making up traits and details of some characters for no good reason. Even if it's not important to the story line, it breaks immersion.
Being nonbinary =/= being sexless. In both instances this word is mentioned, it makes no sense given the context (OP's example + Raqio's scene in the shower. Raqio's"nb" yet SQ is surprised Raqio has genitalia? Why would she? Again, nonbinary =/= sexless )

It's about respecting the original writing. The writers had created a made-up sex in which a person has no genitals (potentially after a surgery). Nonbinary does not reflect this, thus it makes no sense to call characters like Setsu or Raqio nonbinary in the plot.

I've never read something this stupid. "Hey that game you bought? Go change the script yourself." Unbelievable. You know what's not so hard also? Not making stuff up.
If the characters were trans in japanese and the translation had changed that, you all would riot and ask for the unaltered text, so please, stop with the hypocrisy.

If you don't like people pointing it out you can just leave and stop fighting a losing battle.

Some people simply refuse to buy "woke" stuff. It's as understandable as it's foolish, in Gnosia's case at least.
