I staid away from FF7 or FF9, because of their childish and doll-like character design and I still cannot get into any of these games.
FF8 was my first one, as it has proper human-like characters. FFX the second.
Never touched any other FF-game afterwards, but these 2 staid deep in my heart.
At some point, I watched Last Order and Advent Children, even though I didn't really get into as I knew none of the characters that good. XD
But it was interesting and I liked the art-style being more believeable than childish.
I already heard that Crisis Core is not that good tied to the new FF7R remake and some people even say FF7R is a "sequel" to the original FF7-game.
Which is a shame as it would still require me to play this game, while I really still cannot get into the weird character concepts.
I rather would prefer leaving original FF7 out and continue with FF7R.
I mean especially now that I have seen the anime-characters that look far more believeable than the artwork of the original, I am sad that this one has to be part of the franchise still and cannot be left out. :/
And the reason they didn't look like that in FF7 OG is because its from 1997
I know.
Not sure how you mixed that up, but I nowhere said anything bad about FF7R and how the characters look like there.
I even know that the last scene of Cloud in Crisis Core is the beginning scene of FF7R. Nice art style for sure.
And because it's from 1997 is no argument.
FF8 came out one year later in 1998. But has the far better art style for my taste.
FF9 came out in 2000 and again uses a similar childish art style, which I cannot get into.
FF10 came out 2001. For PS2 that is. So it had the best graphics of any FF-title in these times for sure.
But it either used believeable characters and I was fully hooked to that title.
I know that's personal preference, but I simply couldn't ever get into that childish art style.
So for me the original FF7 and FF9 are games, I'll never play. Simply as I cannot get into it of how the characters are portrayed.
Yet again, that's just my issue and my taste. ;)
I didn't know he said that:

As for Final Fantasy 7 Remake it is, indeed, a sequel however while the original is needed to fully understand some underlying nuances its not actually required (so far) to understand the story reasonably well enough. Developer's claim they intend to make the entire remake trilogy not require the original game for new players though I have my doubts but, at the very least, you don't really HAVE to play the original to enjoy it.
Here's a fan made map with a lot of information but there's plenty out there to give you an idea https://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/hpiheb/final_fantasy_7_remake_timeline/
