Honestly, Caleb Pierce grew on me as Zack's VA

tl;dr: Caleb did fine, sounds closer to Japanese VA. But, yes I do miss Rick

I finished the game and I FULLY ADMIT.
Upon FF7R and the trailers for CC:R I said multiple times Caleb Pierce is terrible and whoever casted him should be fired. I was wrong

We all need to let our Rick Gomez nostalgia aside, who we all love because of George Luz.
And as much as I loved Rick. We are all giving Caleb a hard time for no reason.

Caleb played Zack Fair, the "Restless Puppy" very well. Mind you Zack is young and naive as he's 16-23y/o in the game. He's intended to be snotty and over confident at first. Notice how Caleb showed less of this in his performance as the game progressed as Zack matured

And another reason I'd like to point out is how he sounds more in line with his Japanese VA

Disagree, he never sounded like the Zack I like and his take made him sound like an annoying show off while Rick made Zack sound cool and confident.

Still loved the overall experience but I really want that Rick Gomez mod.

Nah doesn't change my mind at all, the VA gets worse as the game goes on. I mean Zack gets older and with that becomes older looking yet still sounds like a 10 year old Californian. His high pitched nasally voice is beyond obnoxious and the worst VA performance in the franchise dethroning previous title holder Tidus.

agreed, hes growing on me too. I honestly think these lines were done at the same time as remake. I say this because if you listen to Zack during the dlc at the very end, he sounds really close to the original VA.

I couldn't but laugh at the last sentence, made my day. I had to stop playing because of his voice. well I'm glad someone is working on a voice mod.

It's quite possible that Rick Gomez is the one who read his lines incorrectly and should have been more adolescent in the beginning rather than cool and confident throughout.
But it makes no difference. This isn't a book character brought to life, Rick was the OG and if you love zack based on your psp experience then that's what you look for in the new guy. Whether its correct or not, I idolized the zack that was always cool and confident when i was a kid, vs this cocky kid they have now.

Even if Rick was wrong in regards to what the director wanted it's still better than a guy in his 20s with a preteens voice.

I played the first four hours or so with English, and then I switched it to Japanese. I think I prefer the Japanese. Caleb Pierce's voice acting is subpar for a AAA studio in 2022.

The problem the modder is going to have though is that not everything in the original was voiced and everything in Reunion is.
