It MIGHT work for the spell too, didn't try it. Generally tho yeah you wanna knock them out of it with a few hits of your sword or a strong magic. Hell Firaga is pretty nice, can status enemies up, 3 hits, so forth so forth. They aren't hard.
I will try blocking and see if that works I guess. I mean, holding your sword up stopping a spell called "death" makes no sense, but I'm out of options otherwise. And I don't have Firaga yet. You encounter these things as early as chapter 2 if your just doing as many missions as possible before continuing main story. I'm nowhere near a point of having end game level spells to work with.

You'll know you're good when you see the big ol GUARD pop up
Either block or use an anti-death accessory
One good thing is that you can keep re-trying the mission and redo the battle to try to down the death monster 1st.
