Basically cloud is a identity thief of zack, zack is deader than door nails..original play lol....but in this remake you are right everything is changed to some degree
^THIS
Cloud has always been the sussy imposter amogus prankster.
1. Him and Aerith pass but only sense and can't physically see/interact with each other.
2. You can see details like Stamp, the mascot dog, is a different dog in Zack's scene from the one you've seen all game because its a parallel universe.
3. Zack can't spontaneously be alive in their universe without cause, otherwise it would effect all events up to that poitn such as their memories, Cloud and Aerith's situation, etc. However, if they're influencing fate for theirs and other parallel universes than Zack can be okay in another universe where he did, in fact, survive without causing any issues of causality with the world we're playing in.
This begs the question of how he will be involved whether its some indirect involvement or if he will be able to cross over at some point. Just to be clear, this Zack is not the same Zack that died. I doubt the authors will write it in such detail but this Zack is a similar Zack but could have some different experiences, and at the very least has lived beyond the death of the Zack we know which could impact him and allow him more experiences, obviously.
Cloud's Wins over Zack
1) Cloud has the better win record against Sephiroth despite not being in SOLDIER or trained in SOLDIER.
2) Despite not being in SOLDIER and not getting SOLDIER Training he can hold his own against SOLIDER Mechs, Turks, 3rd, 2nd, 1st Class SOLDIERS, and an absurd variety of monsters. (Granted he did have help in a few of these instances.) Zack did the same but Cloud doing the same on his own is kinda impressive.
3) Saved the World. Twice if we include Advent Children.
4) Perpetual ladies man to the point of self insert fan fiction.(Tifa, Aerith(Zack's Ex), Jessie)
5) Personally found Cloud more relatable and compelling from a narrative standpoint.
6) Some people adore sassy Disc 1 Cloud.
7) Could physically keep up with SOLDIER conditioned Zack in a harsh environment when no one else in the party could.
Zack wins over Cloud
1) Zack is taller if that's relevant.
2) Dated Aerith officially.(Cessnei also might've had a light crush so that's a thing possibly) Also extra points for being a canon one woman man unlike the Blonde Playboy.
3) Official SOLDIER training and accreditation of First Class.
4) Could handle Jenova Cells and Mako Conditioning w/o issues.
5) Emotional maturity, confidence and self assurance are ahead of Cloud at least for a while.
6) Clearly a role model that Cloud emulates and gets inspiration from.
7) I think Hollander overpowered Cloud in a cutscene which I find incredibly f***ed up if I remembered that correctly.
8) Saved the world from Genesis w/o anyone even knowing about it.
9) Saved Cloud's live and by extension the world. AKA became a Hero.
10) Zack is very likable and probably one of the most unique, likable, and barely talked about protagonists that Square Enix came out with.
11) Zack makes a lot of friends pretty easily. Cloud not so much w/o a Tifa or Aerith buffer to ease tension.
12) According to one Genesis clone, his hair is delicious.
13) Advent Children Cloud tends to irritate people.
Yeah, Zack does have more points on the board regarding reasons to like him more but I think I still like Cloud slightly more because he drew me in first and again, his identity issues and emotional turmoil I can relate to more and also the survivor's guilt and depression in his Advent Children phase I could also relate to but I'm like 1% of the population that likes that Cloud. But do you TC. I think both guys are class acts and are the pinnacle of Square Enix JRPG protagonists.
