Hosting a multiplayer game not working

Greetings,
as previous users have mentioned already, hosting multiplayer games on PC from different networks still doesn't work.

My friend and I (both on PC, have the game opened, both own the game) can not join each other games. My friend is on keyboard and I tried with both keyboard and Xbox controller. I also tried right-clicking on my friend and choosing to join or invite them to the game, but it did not help.

We tried reinstalling the game but no matter what we try, whenever we select the option to host and then invite the other person, they accept the invite and the game just puts them in their own separate lobby (alone).

After multiple attempts, somehow we managed to break the overlay to invite friends. I would choose 'Host game', the screen would darken (because of the overlay) but no actual overlay would be visible to chose friends from. Also, the input was bugged because of it and I could click anything with the mouse, nor keyboard, nor controller. After I spammed escape a few times only then was I able to get responsive input again (seemed like the overlay bugged out). The problem now is that even after reloading local files and reinstalling the game, the issue with the overlay was still present.

Any suggestion or fix to this problem, as well as the problem with creating a multiplayer game would be appreciated. Kind regards
