There are some shared story and lore elements, and the graphics are similar, but the rest is pretty different.
The combat is even more hands of. You control what units you bring to a battle and which 1/2/3/4 of the spells your casters know they cast. That's about it.
There are commanders, but one can lead an unlimited number of troops.
You have a tile based map, not a province based one.
There are different tiles like plains, forests, cities....
Each has different types of income for a few resources. Gold and iron are the "standard" resources, but there are a few special ones like Herbs, Gems, Hands of Glory, Fungus...
There are different classes, each with different units, special resources and gameplay plans.
They might have different recruitment location (called citadels).
The goal is to either kill all enemy commanders, or take all their recruitment location away. In either case the player loses.
In general recruitment is a lot slower and a bit more luck based. Most classes for example can't recruit a commander each turn, and troop recruitment also often takes multiple turns to safe up to. On the other hand you recruit your units in batches.
The game is more focused on single player and a lot more random than Dominions. It's more about the absurd stories and learning how to roll with the punches the games throws at you. Especially in the early parts of the game you are fighting more against the world itself than against your enemies.
Personally I really enjoy and recommend it. It's definitely at least worth trying out.
Thanks for the comprehensive answer as usual!
I am just watching a few videos, and the graphics seems even more problematic than Dominions! ;) Otherwise, I find a lot to my liking.
