I view it as a 'side strategy', you can do quite a few of those with Senator, as they get quite an array of different mages.
Yes it was in CoE4.
Stacking mages is a right thing to do as Senator. You can always burn a single forest with Pyro - no big loss.
If you have a lot of them placed on interesting positions (like one on the South, and one in the North, which naturally draw freespawns toward the center), or paired together, you would better go with Reveler.
The only positive side of freespawns in CoE5 is that they can't be overrun = draining AP's of advancing enemies.
It takes a lot of time to fill some area with them, though, and even more of that to spawn Hamadryad or anything, that can protect your forest from being deflagged.
Revelers aren't necessary, but might be a good gimmick. Obviously, if I have an offer for Pyro and Reveler early in game and they are matched in price with the only Ancient Forest near my starting location, I will just go with Pyro.
It's just, some people don't like permanent destruction in any form, I think.
Also, Lars are quite useless. They can fasten your army regen, but only if they HAPPEN to spawn with the Heal spell. Over that, you pay 25G for +1G income that will be further reduced by snow, when Lar can't even fight off 3 Brigands on his own.
Bingo. If you don't get a reveler then you have to put up with ancient forests spawning hostile animals all game that wander into your villages and unflag them, and as an added bonus the satyrs and maenads will occasionally eat other wandering indies for you. You buy one reveler early on, convert a few ancient forests in your neighborhood, then assign them to ferry troops around. It's very affordable insurance against losing territory to random indies.
