so what happen if you starter character dies?

just had my warlock die, the game is still playing but curious if like in dominions he ressurect or something

Under some conditions they can come back, but for the most part once they die they are dead.

Losing your leader is usually a set back but unless you are playing trolls or pale ones it's not really permanent.

That being said I usually would try to restart if my position doesn't look fun to claw out of since all gem gathering stops when you lose your gem ritual leaders etc

If you lose all your faction mages (necro and necro apprentice) there is an increased chance of getting a recruitment offer on a new apprentice.
If you lose your baron/markgraf/barbarian chief you will get an offer for a new one in a couple of turns (also random so it might take some time).

also is there anyway to rename characters?, I kinda got attached to some and want to use some names so I can differentiatethem from the rest (wish I could also change the icon in game but that is too much)

Wasn't there a launch command --rename for CoE4? Would that work in 5?

It does work, I've already used it. --rename as a command like switch and then press the 'n' button while on the commander's description screen.
