Dealing with The King in Yellow
So part of the local fauna of my current game is The King in Yellow. He is wandering around killing everything he crosses paths with.

Is there anything I can do about him in the early game or should I just treat him like a horrible, yelllow-clad hurricane and avoid him?

Avoid. Later on he isn't all that tough, but early he is quite frightening. For what it's worth he tends to stay in his local area so unless there is something very valuable where he roams you can just avoid him and raid behind him.

Thanks

He could have ended the game for me quite quickly but I had a backup citadel. Always nice to see that he has an entourage of troops that he has enslaved.

Oh yeah. I once had him lurk around my witches tower as well. Getting some second citadel up and going and moving centre of operations went way up in priotities.

I hope you Truecharmed him

I've never seen the King in Yellow close to the mainland, sounds like awful luck.

King in Yellow spawned behind my frontlines thanks to a relatively inactive pyramid. I tried throwing a cloudfolk army at him and they predictably got wiped. Had to divert one of my better armies at him.
Huh. Never seen this spawn. Interesting to know that Hastur is running around in 5.

I rarely see him. Pushing on 100 hours now, and I only remember seeing the bastard once.

He was playing out in the ocean, thankfully, and I didn't even know he could charm/enslave his own army... when the monster finally came ashore, I squashed him easily enough.

It's the invisible soulshatters and other high-tier horrors that spawn around your base from day 1 that get me.... "Oh, let me explore 3 tiles to the west of my.... aaaand that's a restart"

I've even started a game with a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ soulshatter directly one tile adjacent to my starting citadel! (was barbarian: totem has spirit sight) This is just retarded, honestly. I've noticed plenty of AI factions get wiped out by horrors in the early game too. There is just no counter to invisible (scouts don't help) army destroying SC horrors milling about in the early game, right next to your start location.

Fair enough. If I spent as much time playing this as I do staring at Notepad++, I'd probably have seen it by now. Or maybe not.

FWIW: High Cultist’s Basalt King can summon with T3 ritual the King in Yellow.

I once did a series of tests with warlock. Just waiting how long it takes for an apprentice offer to show up.
In one test my starting citadel was attacked on turn one by a horror. Don't know which one it was, but it was strong enough that if I had moved out my casters or split up my starting units I would have lost then and there.

I was able to just ignore him. Thankfully. I had more Citadels so his occasional attack at my Temple wasn't a big problem. He seems to not be too focused so he wanders around which helps make him less of a threat.

funny enough, right after reading this I also had a King in Yellow appear early on in a game for me. Fortunately a pyramid of skulls was somehow able to best him by a successful fear spell. Probably just lucky!

I had a mage sitting on a sphere once using the tile's scry ability until the king decided to materialise and kill the viewer. He spent the rest of the game chilling in a nearby lake.
