I'd recommend playing on a large skirmish map if you want to get the hang of economy mechanics and things like sandworms etc as you won't be threatened by other ai for ages. Getting used to how & where to expand in order to not crash your Solari income should be first focus & you can always spy on the ai with ornithopters to get an idea of how big your military should be too so they don't just overwhelm you with a huge army you weren't expecting.
The biggest examples I can think of are:
1) Agents. Agents can play a HUGE role over the course of the game, from unlocking different Discovery resolutions to unlocking new technologies. They're even mentioned once or twice in other tutorial missions I believe, but there's no info on how to actually utilize them without the player stumbling across the mechanic.
2) Research. The research tree can be a bit un-intuitive at first, given the different "categories", branching research paths and "queue" mechanic.
3) CHOAM. The CHOAM stocks almost seem like a stock-market mini-game; there's no real indication of how important (or not) purchasing/selling stocks are, or if there's any deeper rewards other than just getting more Solari.
So far it was Earl Vernius of Ix DLC + Heroes of Dune FLC.
Later expansions might add something similar to the Minor House function from Emperor of Dune where our Faction can ally with a Faction not currently represented on Dune. The Ally options might be limited by the relationships Factions have with each other. Ally Factions could be seperate and minor... or more likely.... drawn from the pool of inactive Factions. At the start of the game you'd have an option to Ally with a faction (Possibly paying more Spice Tax based balancing princples and the relationship your Faction has with that Faction.) Gaining access to an Ally Faction would allow players to potentially hire some of their elite Units or Hero Units. Because the game is 4 Factions Active max right now, this system requires a minimum of 8 Factions. The next DLC Faction puts this in striking range.
Examples:
-You are playing House Atreides. if Harkonnen and Ecaz are not active on Dune, you can Ally with House Ecaz, but not with Harkonnen.
-You are playing Earl Vernius of Ix. You have a good relationship with House Atreides, who expelled the Tleilaxu from Ix and returned your homeworld to you. On the flipside, you have a bad relationship with Tleilaxu and House Richese. (Depending on what factions get added to the game...) You might not be able to ally with House Richese, but the Tleilaxu may be willing to work with you, for an increased price. In part, because they have a habit of working with anyone.
This system could work in a few ways. You could have it so inactive Factions are in a pool of potential allies to choose at the same time you chose your councilllors. Choosing an ally would be optional, as it would have a cost... and with increased Spice Tax, this could be a potential weakness enemies would exploit in game. They could also implement minor powers or even factions that have no physical presence on Dune as potential allies as well. Each of these groups will have Elite Units and Hero Units that players could potentially hire while allied with these factions. There may be special buildings or improved building choices as well.
(The Fremen as an Ally doesn't mean they aren't on Dune, but it does mean they don't have their major Faction Sietch active on the map you are participating on. This ally function would turn on and off in Conquest mode based on this, and the cost to Ally with the Fremen would be reflected by your relationship with them.)
Oh.. and to poster above.. depending on the win conditions set for the game, getting 50% of held CHOAM Shares in a match can hand you victory. This system is a bit bizarre in Conquest mode, because between matches, your shareholdings are reset. One of the things you can do with CHOAM is investing in it early, because Stocks typically rise in value through the course of the match, then mid to late game, you can just sell off a bunch of shares to get lots of Solari and buy whatever you need to win. If other players were doing the same, you might trigger a mass sell off and a panic, causing the CHOAM prices to crater because players don't want to get stuck holding worthless CHOAM shares.
