is this game faster than civ games?

im not the HUGEST fan of turn based civ style games but love rts games and the dune lore. i want a game i can play versus my buddies with but i get bored playing civ with them. does this game have a bit more going on than say civ? or a bit more rts style mechanics?

Depends on the what civ type game you talk about... But in one evening after the work. You can easily play two short games, A campaign does takes longer, because it is combination of several "mini" games.
This is not RTS, so that may be a problem to you, But all in all I consider this short 4x game.

This game is a nice little mix of RTS/4x(mostly leaning towards 4x probably) and the games last 1-3 hours depending on the settings. Multiplayer games are played on 1.5x speed because the game is rather slow, and for the most time on normal speed, nothing of importance is happening, so the average game is 1:30-2 hours.

Also, keep in mind since you want to play with friends, the game is designed as a 4 player free for all. While you can play 2v2, the most optimal experience is free for all.

Yes, this is way faster than Civ. My friends and I used to do 10 hour marathon sessions of Civ that would still sometimes spill into the next day or two, but this game goes like 3 hours max if you're on 1.5x speed without pausing, the standard for multiplayer. It has a "Hegemony" win condition too that's basically a timer to make the most solid player win if no one can gain an advantage.

In beta stage this game is more quick than this edition right now. IMO, right now spice war is slower than normal CIV games, too slow for me even turn the speed to 2x.

bear in mind you can set the speed of the game in multiplayer to something everyone agrees on. Typically most choose 1.5x which is also the speed used in tournaments of which there is a thriving community.
