What is the general, vanilla strategy here? With Corino?
I find that the game is a tad slow grind fest until only one person remains.

What is the bread and butter, vanilla strategy for all the factions, especially with Corino?

What do you guys think?

Well, the beginning and middle parts of a game have you building up your economy while catering your build and play style toward certain victory conditions. You're also going to be expanding and scouting in order to plan your future moves, so it is a bit of a slow but tactical start.

Scout first, expand later. Certain factions, such as the Fremen, won't really value uniform expansion. Since your spice harvesting crews will be all over the place, you're better off just building toward priority zones and special zones. Corrino incurs penalties for expanding too far, but they can get some hefty bonuses for villages surrounding your main bases if you get the required research. Corrino will want to build tall rather than wide.

If you want some basic starter builds to try out, I can give you a few for the factions I've played more than a few times:

Corrino:
  • Pick the counsellors that grant a duplicate building and no investigation restrictions
  • Acquire the villages surrounding your base & expand for spice and special regions
  • Complete the first research options under each tree, then decide on your victory type
  • Corrino is a good house for an Economic victory, but you can try for a Political victory

Harkonnen:
  • Pick the counsellors that grant extra militia slots and oppression bonuses
  • Complete the first research options under each tree, then decide on your victory type
  • Build up your militia and research the building that lets your militia fight rebellions
  • Harkonnen are great for Economic and Domination victories

Fremen:
  • Pick Shimoom and Stilgar as your councillors
  • Befriend all of the Sietches, but make sure you have enough water to expand as well
  • Rush for the eco research that grants you vision of all spice zones
  • Spam harvesting crews to cover all of the spice zones that others won't be able to reach for a while
  • Complete the first research options under each tree, then decide on your victory type
  • Build up your militia and research the building that lets your militia fight rebellions
  • Grab the research options that grant you bonuses per friendly Sietch
  • Fremen are great for Economic and Domination victories
