and big thanks to the comments on this thread for suggesting and such. its definitely a big help to make my decision.
Dune isn't an RTS game. it's a political 4x game with some RTS elements.
It is certainly unique but if you come expecting an RTS - it's really not.
Even in northgard it seemed that anything over 4 player matches seemed to be a lot more popular. Be it against other players or against the AI.
Yeah, his leaving out of AoE 4 which is easily the best AoE tells a lot about his opinion. Also, he lists the C&C games as being good, which is also telling. I mean, the C&C games were fun to play through once or twice and maybe do a few multiplayer games after for the giggles, but they were all garbage tier compared to the Starcrafts and whatnot. The Homeworlds were FAR better RTS games than the C&C games, and they had abysmal competitive multiplayer.
More on topic, though, this game is fun; Especially with friends. It's pretty slow paced, though. The factions all feel pretty unique and play quite a bit differently, which is nice.
1) The golden age of RTS games was, in retrospect, largely devoid of good game design, tank spam basically being the order of the day every day, with a few exceptions. DSW isn't even trying to be one of those types of RTS, but RTS is a broader genre than "those games I remember from 30 years ago"
2) What would adding Ordos do? Since they don't fill any gameplay niche that isn't already filled, not that they had much of a niche beyond being the "hit-and-run faction".
3) There is no best RTS ever, this is a silly question, but DSW certainly offers a lot to people who want a complex game that is real-time and doesn't take 8+ hours to play to completion.
Asolutely right
'Best ever' is highly subjective, but it can also be assessed objectively. Take into account the following, and see how you'd score your favourite RTS:
-Gameplay
-Balance
-App stability
-Content
- Strategic Depth
-Value for money
-Theme
-Adherence to source material
-Art design
-Production
-Innovation
-Sound and music design
-Presentation
-UI design
-Post-release developer support
The best will score VERY highly in several categories, but in my extensive experience, DSW might be the only RTS/Hybrid to accomplish everything at an extremely high level. It's not my absolute favourite title in the genre (yet!), but it is definitely THE benchmark for quality.
If you're hoping for a variety of absurdly colorful units with every faction having some unique doomsday weapon like the Westwood Dune games, you will be disappointed.... but if you always felt those games left out all the Political Intrigue that belongs to Dune... this game will be an eye opener. While both have their appeal, this game has done an excellent job of creating it's own space.
I think House Ordos is possible, but not as Westwood Imagined it. They would probably return to the source material and change a number of elements before bringing House Ordos back... but there is plenty of room for cunning factions in this game.
In a similar vein, there is also room for more tech based factions: Vernius of Ix isn't the end. House Richese is their chief competitor, but never quite matches up since they follow the letter of the law in regards to A.I. Technology. This makes room for a more Righteous Tech Faction that has it's own tricks... but may share some of Vernius of Ix unique mechanics, such as Patents. House Richese would probably have a much better relationship with Mentats, in particular, whose Origins and existence largely relies on keeping A.I. banned.
Of course, Bene Tleilaxu are also a "Technology" faction, although in a very different taboo manner. They are enemies of Ix, in particular, but as a secretive guild, it's very likely there would be a Great House they would work with by Proxy. House Ordos could represent them, but not fully if they are going to also work with House Ix.
House Ginaz is widely known for their Swordmasters. They train to a high level of Swordsmanship by using specially modified Combat Robots that only learn combat and are only allowed to be used in training (Although these units, if misused, can kill the trainee quite easily.) They have a feud with House Moritani, which is a House known for it's Assassins. House Atreides was aligned with House Ginaz. Obviously, you have a set up here with those who prefer direct combat against those who prefer infiltration and assassination.
House Fenring is another Assassin type house that actually had a Count in their lineage who wrote the Assassin's Handbook as an Imperial Representative. House Fenring was also the Siridar-Absentia of Caladan while the Duke Caladan was in charge of Arrakis and after his betrayal. Fenring is a House Loyal to Corrino, at least, obstensibly... they have never had an official Homeworld and were often kept close to the Emperor.
There could be other Houses that would be proxies for the Spacing Guild, for the Bene Gesserit, and so on! So many possibilities!
I do care because I solely play this game in multiplayer. If a player base is dwindling, then it means that the multiplayer will too.
I haven't liked tabletop games in years but have been binge playing it. It's just tasteful. They need some combat flare and more skill/unit diversity to give it long term replayability. Def on the right track.
I know this is a bit of a delayed post, though to say that this was one of the best RTS games would be... not a great definition, here's why!
This game plays like a cross between a Sid Meier's Civilization game and a RTS game. It is not as much an RTS as something like dawn of war or Starcraft, for pure RTS those are probably better go-to's.
This game is definitely good fun though! It's worth a shot. I don't play online often, or if I do it's with friends, so I can't vouch to what the pvp scene is like, though I do like the conquest-style campaign map for going against the AI.
