devs refused to follow books lore, instead they followed thier own way.
this product was not for me.
Did they ? Some errors, some omissions, some simplifications and they can't put everything from the book in skirmish or conquest mode... still I really feal the Dune Universe alive in it thanks to the mix of war, politics etc... and they also use things from the prequels books, like Ecaz, Ix (wich is much more present) etc... not bad in that aspect for me.

LOL not even close, its not even a top 10 contender. There are many many better rts than spice wars. Starcraft 1/2, Warcraft 2/3, TotalAnhilation, SupemeCommander 1 and Forged Alliance (Supcom2 is trash), Beyond All Reason, C&C (almost all of them), Age of Empires 1-3, Empire Earth 1/2, Dune 2000, Metal Fatigue, Dawn of War 1 , Company of Heroes 1 & 2. Stellaris ( arguably an rts), Stormgate. LOTR Battle for Middle earth 1 / 2. Battle Realms. black and white, sacrifice, etc etc, i could keep going but i'll stop

Black and White? Stellaris? What are you talking about? Neither of those are RTS games.

----------

Stellaris is a 4x with RTS elements. So I can kind of see why you might try to twist it into an RTS box. But it falls short of a true RTS. IMO, it is even less of an RTS than Dune Spice Wars. And if you were playing it purely for an RTS game play experience it doesn't even rank in the top 50.

In Stellaris you can literally design your ships. Or you can vassalize neighboring empires. Neither of those belong to the RTS genre. And those are two CORE components of Stellaris. Both of those concepts fall squarely in the 4X genre. Much like MANY of the components of Stellaris. Stellaris is 80% 4X and 20% RTS, at best. I would argue it is more like 90/10. Hell, you can literally play as an empire that is UNABLE to declare wars on other empires, or wait, that's right declaring war...surely that belongs to the RTS genre. LOL

----------

As for Black and White, you can't be serious? Do you mean the Lionhead Studios game where you play god and use your pet to get villagers to worship you? That game is not even REMOTELY RTS. Please tell me there is a different Black and White that I'm not aware of.

Black and White is one of the godfathers of the God Sim genre. It has as much RTS as Call of Duty. You know, both games to happen in "real-time" and involve some type of combat. So they must both be RTS. LOL

----------

That being said, I don't consider Dune Spice Wars to be a pure RTS. So I agree with the heart of what you are saying. That if you compare it purely for what it offers as an RTS it leaves a LOT to be desired.

However, for the OP if you looking for a game that takes the existing RTS genre that you clearly know and love, and slows it down a bit while adding new diplomacy options so that you can get a taste of a 4X game. Then this is the game for you. Because Dune Spice Wars IS NOT an RTS. It is a 4X game with a LOT of RTS components. I would argue it is more true to RTS than Stellaris. Probably somewhere around the 60% 4X and 40% RTS.

3 points to consider:

1) If you don't like Northgard you may not like Dune Spice Wars.
2) If you want an RTS that goes at a slower pace and has a diplomacy system for multiplayer situations you might like Dune Spice Wars.
3) If you aren't sure after those two points, try it and play it for an hour and then get a refund if you didn't like it.

I recommend it highly to my friends if they

1 - like the Dune Universe but aren't hung up on "Lore Accuracy" in every representation
2 - want a slower RTS experience with a deeper diplomatic feel
3 - want to try a different kind of game than most other games you will find

Dune Spice Wars finds a way to make 4X games playable in a single sitting. This is not easy task. But it works.

It's not an RTS, it's a real times board game. If you go in thinking it's an RTS you're going to be disappointed. It's one of the greatest games ever made in my opinion, but you're probably not going to like it if you don't like 4X games or board games.
so what you're saying is i should avoid this game?

I regret my purchase. I still come around once in awhile hoping they get the AI to *actually* play by some of the rules... eh. Multiplayer is... MP and so even trying to just have fun SP isn't even a possibility.

The game is good but you won't have many young people playing 2 hour pvp. Starcraft zergling rush isn't happening. Main base is extremely difficult to kill unless you destroyed every town and don't get counterattacked by another opponent. It's a great meeting point between quick rts and the lengthy civilization games and I like what they've done.
Will 5 Mar 2024 @ 12:04am
I'd just like to say I've played about 460 hrs on this game at least and in my opinion it is one of the best games ever made. I've played every dune game from the Amiga version of Dune through Amiga Dune 2 to Dune 2000, emperor battle for dune and this tops them all. But it's not an RTS in any traditional sense and it's nothing like the westwood games, it is its own thing.

Many of those are very outdated. Some of those don't even exist to buy anywhere. (LOTR 2). Also you left out AOE4 which is surprisingly good. I think Dune is one of the top 5 best RTS in recent 10 years with a fresh take. Plus it's unique in it's not simply just an RTS but an RTS/4x Hybrid.

I'm waiting for the free update with the dlc to play again. don't wanna burn out before we get a lot of new content
It´s a niche genre with a niche franchise. Not so much now, thanks to the movies, but niche anyways.

I would recommend this game, as someone who only played about a day a while back, I just played it again yesterday all day and had a lot better time, I think they tweaked a lot of things. It is very different from a normal RTS though as was said, it's more of a 4X/RTS hybrid. I think part of why I enjoyed it more was I read someone saying it's more about attrition. The political/espionage system is fairly complicated in this game compared to other games I've played, and if you ignore it like I did you kind of get screwed. It's very hard to just take out non-local factions (the big houses) with military alone like you would in a normal RTS. Maybe with Harkonnen I haven't played them yet really, but with Atreides I failed every time without the political standing, because they can impose all kinds of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ penalties on you. Also there are some sort of hidden ways to make a lot more money. I was always struggling with money, especially with the spice exchange rate seems to always be kind of terrible. Well the stock shares turn out to be really important because you can get a permanent bonus to your exchange rate the more you hold with some of the tech upgrades.

It does have a learning curve, not even sure they cover all the important stuff in the tutorial, I need to look at it again. When I first played I didn't even know you could have more than 5 units because of the way they show it on the UI. They just do it a weird way though and it only shows slots based on how many you can train at a time, and also you can raise the unit cap a few times with different tech as well as reduce your military upkeep, so it is actually possible to get a decent sized army. I honestly still don't know how to get the heavy units for Atreides, I finished the game before I got them.

As someone who is not great at RTS games and tends to want to turtle up, this game is great because that's actually a viable strategy here. As long as you are strong politically, you can just protect your territory and build your economy and win with hegemony just by taking neutral territory and paying your taxes. I also enjoy the RTS nature of it because I don't really play turn-based 4X games anymore. I used to but I just prefer real time now that it's a thing for those types of games.

The game is awesome, the marketing is terrible.

Uhh sir, the newest movie adaptation follows the book lore. I think what you mean to say is this: "The movies leave stuff out." It feels like the same exact story. I am rereading it now after watching the movie and I just enjoy it that much more.
