Not enough publicity. The more you wait the less players there will be. But i believe on march 7 there will be more than the usual players. For real its a very good RTS.
The game is very good, but it doesn't have the same sandbox features that are common in the rts genre. My friend group continues to play it to this day. It feels like playing a board game. The rules are deep and create some cool table-politics, but there aren't many ways to shake up the gameplay.

how long does the multiplayer matches average duration?

1-3 hours, depending on player skill and game speed.

Maybe daily players count is irrelevant and uncorrelated to game quality?

Just start playing it the 7th... There will be a lot of players with the update.

I wouldn't get worried about daily player accounts, the question is whether you can get a game, plenty of excellent RTS games have 1-2K daily players

One thing, that this is an awesome RTS with a lot of grand strategy flavor game even better if you like the Dune universe doesn't contradict the fact that it is quite niche and didn't have a mass of players because it's not C and C style (yes it's not Dune 2 modern version, deal with it) and because it's not totally geared to military action, in fact you can win without conquering or destroying your foes.

It's more like a Hybrid, RTS mixed with 4X elements. Like the old Sins of a Solar Empire, or Shiro's previous game, Northguard. I'd say it's the best Dune game I've played, but not the best pure RTS. Watch some gameplay videos, and see what you are getting into.

That being said, the new update coming out the 7th, is adding Hero units, and is trying to adjust combat overall. So there is a chance it could add more interesting tactics to the RTS side of the game.

LOL not even close, its not even a top 10 contender. There are many many better rts than spice wars. Starcraft 1/2, Warcraft 2/3, TotalAnhilation, SupemeCommander 1 and Forged Alliance (Supcom2 is trash), Beyond All Reason, C&C (almost all of them), Age of Empires 1-3, Empire Earth 1/2, Dune 2000, Metal Fatigue, Dawn of War 1 , Company of Heroes 1 & 2. Stellaris ( arguably an rts), Stormgate. LOTR Battle for Middle earth 1 / 2. Battle Realms. black and white, sacrifice, etc etc, i could keep going but i'll stop

Its very good, but saying its the best in a field of giants is funny.

i think you are a bit harsh. Some games you are talking about are way different. This Dune game brings a new style and is quite unique.

That's why I was explaining to the OP, that this really isn't a strict RTS. If you compare it to a game like Starcraft or Age of Empires, especially from a competitive multiplayer, it won't hold a candle. Of course I find it odd you included Black and White, and Sacrifice in your list.

This is a great RTS/4x hybrid. So it really depends what you are looking for.

First of all, the game is RTS/4x hybrid, so it plays nothing like age of empires for example which is a pure RTS. The game is played like 4x but in real time, slow and steady. Games do not last 10++ hours like in traditional 4x, they last around 1-3 hours depending on your settings. The game is basically a sandbox game, which is true for the campaign format as well.

Also, just because some people said something, it does not make it true. At this point you need to try it yourself, and keep in mind the 2 hour window for refund if you don't like it.

Turin has some nice videos of MP which he uploads often, if you want to watch some MP and how it plays out. He explains a lot of stuff while playing in each video, so you will not be lost for the duration of the game.

I love the game myself, but tags like "best RTS" is mostly a personal opinion. You can find plenty of people active to play with MP as well, regardless of how many are playing concurrently. Have fun if you buy it.

3 hours is consider long for me. i never actually played strategy games like Crusader Kings 2/3, Age of Wonders and all of that. im more into a real time strategy games like AoE 2. i have tried Northgard but the game are just not fun for me, too restricted.

if i dont like Northgard or CK2/3 type of games will I hate Dune Spice Wars?

thats just not true at all. if the game is really that good, of course there will be more players.

just like a restaurant, if the restaurants and the foods are really that good, surely there will be more customers coming.
