Do I have to read the books or watch any of the movies to play this game? Does the game spoil any story?
I currently just started reading the first book because Dune is so influential to science fiction, do I need to read all of the books or watch the movies to experience this game or does the game spoil any story?

I would say, the less you know about Frank Herbert's Dune world, the more you will like the game. The less you will be disappointed. So 'no'.

[EDIT]
... it is okay to stop reading the Dune books after "Children of Dune". The first book was - and still is - at the top of every serious (old) Sci Fi reader's book list.

I read all of the six original books and am not disappointed by this game at all. It's the best videogame adaption of the Dune universe so far.

I know absolutely nothing about Dune and I'm really enjoying this. Would say it's my favourite strategy game of the past few years.

There is no story in the game, only characters and factions named after stuff in the book.

I'm currently on the 12th of the 23 book series of Dune novels and I understand that to make a fun game one must change things from the book. I'm reading them in the order of the story timeline. I have no problem with having multiple families vying for control of dune even though in the story there's always only one family at a time. The novels from Brian Herbert and Kevin Anderson are equally as awesome as Frank's original 6 books, really love how they started with the Butlerian Jihad and finished the story from Frank's extensive notes. I think the Dune series is the greatest story ever told!

I am finishing Chapterhouse Dune. Saw all movie adaptations (many times). Occasionally play TTG. Spice Wars is a beautiful game that enhances and adds on the experience from reading the books. No,it doesn't spoil anything as the premise that early on in the novels Harkonen assassination attempt went wrong / never happened, so its alternate history story arc )
