I've always thought this very thing- it plays more like a board game
And playing with a familiar group on voice-coms would be ideal for exactly what you said, making deals... back-stabbing
I have played random lobby games and they are nearly just as good- people do make deals and back-stab. Unfortunately, though I don't think its avoidable and it does happen in all RTS titles, you get a lot of leavers and there is 'king-making' very often (king-making: multiple players supporting one player so you can't really beat them, whether or not it is in anyone's interest... this can still be fun though too, when you beat them anyway)
AOE4 is the only truly good RTS released this last decade even though it's still flawed. Dune is a fun game but it's slow pace will definitely hurt it's growth. Most people consider AOE4 to be a snails pace. There's not really any reason to pit these two games against each other when they basically aren't the same genre.
If they just add more fun explosive animations for weapons and maybe some more missiles units and make battles a lil bit faster everyone will be satisfied and it would be rated as overwhelmingly positive... Strange world, it's impossible now to change anything in the mechanics for this game it's out of EA, Have anyone heard anything from the developers? Do they have plans for the future? or that's it?
I believe remake of AOE2 is the best RTS- even DLC is still coming ;-), however AOE4 is fun as well.
Shortly speaking it's poor time for classic RTS.
Well okay, I wasn't going to consider the remaster a new game since it's a tried and true classic. But yeah the AOE series is doing really well even with the hiccups of AOE4. Dune is a worthy addition even though it's a hybrid. I guess maybe the market for people who want a real-time game of this pace is different.
And of course there's more to it than just the Risk-type boardgame; that's just the basic idea.
I recommend checking out D.O.R.F. if you look for classic RTS style games. It is still in development but already looks promising so far. But it will probably be out in 1-2 years though because it is made by a very small team. At least that is something to look forward for classic RTS enjoyers.
