Yup had this happen. I was so confused that I went back to a previous save to verify I had set it to auto.
You lose 5% which you get back from the ornithopter and your spice can scale well with all the factions during the game, so basically you lose nothing. That's probably not the definition of "insane".
When you are fighting other players mid/late game you won't be able to keep attention to everything all the time, including your spice. So auto recall with ornithopter is pretty much the way to go.
You could go for manual control on early game, but that 5% won't be missed that much if you play correctly.
Probably about half a dozen without an orni.
I think it needs to be more, 5% isnt really an incentive to disable auto recall. :)
