But as a 4X game goes, I'd say it does take the uniqueness of each faction and applies it to units, tech trees, effectively forcing the player to take a different style / approach to be successful with each faction. To me, the game works fine in the sense that some Dune board games work fine as a board game, but may not be the perfect adaptation of the Dune universe - if that analogy makes sense?
You're right on this ''I wouldn't expect a 4X game to capture all of the complexity or breadth of the Dune universe, with the political machinations, plans within plans, etc''
But I was talking mainly about gameplay possibilities, like tech, units, maybe adding homeworld HQ, affiliation with Bene Tleilax or Gesserit. And yes, probably had too much expecations for this game, kinda still like the game, will play again, but feel like its half baked.
The only books you could potentially make into more wide-ranging games are the last two, with the three-way war between the Bene Gesserit, the Bene Tleilax and the Honored Matres, but barely anyone read that far into the franchise as book two is already majorly off-putting by having barely any likable characters in it - Paul is a murderous butcher of billions, his sister is crazy and almost kills herself by fighting robots in the nude (and then becomes the big bad in the next book), his mother just ran away and abandoned her children, the opposition to the Atreides are all scheming, pompous snobs...it's good, mature reading, but terrible material to forge a game out of.
It seems to be used a lot as an excuse to justify the obvious omissions in the game.
Explore, Expand, Exploit, Exterminate.
They might add them as DLCs!!
Interesting so I should look for other 4x games then, I would put imperium galactica in this category as well. bookmarked stellaris mentioned by someone.
The list is (almost) endless.
All of those games have bad combat though... Sins of a solar empire 2 is being worked on.
Try out dune in 2 days for the 1.0 release.
Can confirm, I have over 1500 hrs of play in Stellaris, and its not over yet. Have a playset with over forty active mod….this game is insane!!
I'll pass judgement as thus, when the game hits version 1.1. Until then, things are up in the air for the most part.
However, I do agree with the tech trees. I feel they are less about researching technology, and more like putting points in trait trees, similar to specializations in World of Warcraft. In which case, should be immediate, rather than researched.
