Feel a bit sad about this game now.
Im crazy about Dune, like my father was. Have read all the books, watched all the series, movies, own and like the board game, have the baron harkonnen figure on my computer desk and was over excited for this game when it was announced.

Now its close to official release, after playing for 150hrs, feel like its a missed opportunity. Tech tree is thin, units are basic, customization is weak, conquest mode is a bit boring. Really thought this game would be more like Stellaris, deep, complex, versatile, modable. Dune universe is so deep, Ixian tech, Tleilaxu ghola and genetic engeneering, Ginaz Swordmasters, Mentat, Bene Gesserit etc , etc, etc.

I know its still possible for this game to evolve but the foundation seems so basic, guess i'll have to hope and wait for another Dune game to come out....

I guess it depends on your expectations. Personally, I wouldn't expect a 4X game to capture all of the complexity or breadth of the Dune universe, with the political machinations, plans within plans, etc.

But as a 4X game goes, I'd say it does take the uniqueness of each faction and applies it to units, tech trees, effectively forcing the player to take a different style / approach to be successful with each faction. To me, the game works fine in the sense that some Dune board games work fine as a board game, but may not be the perfect adaptation of the Dune universe - if that analogy makes sense?

There's some interesting discussion on their Discord, who knows if any of it is true, but there might be some really big changes. Not that I disagree with you, especially the military part I feel it's particularly bland.

You're right on this ''I wouldn't expect a 4X game to capture all of the complexity or breadth of the Dune universe, with the political machinations, plans within plans, etc''

But I was talking mainly about gameplay possibilities, like tech, units, maybe adding homeworld HQ, affiliation with Bene Tleilax or Gesserit. And yes, probably had too much expecations for this game, kinda still like the game, will play again, but feel like its half baked.

Which you will never receive because the desert planet and the people fighting about it in the first book are the most popular part of the franchise.

The only books you could potentially make into more wide-ranging games are the last two, with the three-way war between the Bene Gesserit, the Bene Tleilax and the Honored Matres, but barely anyone read that far into the franchise as book two is already majorly off-putting by having barely any likable characters in it - Paul is a murderous butcher of billions, his sister is crazy and almost kills herself by fighting robots in the nude (and then becomes the big bad in the next book), his mother just ran away and abandoned her children, the opposition to the Atreides are all scheming, pompous snobs...it's good, mature reading, but terrible material to forge a game out of.

What is a 4X game, never heard of that before until mentioned in this game.

It seems to be used a lot as an excuse to justify the obvious omissions in the game.

4X means less RTS and more Board game but that's being said, Dune Spice Wars is trying hard to include all the categories from strategy games (politics - grand strategy - resource management - RTS - 4X - role play . diplomacy..etc) into just one game that takes only 4GB from your PC. I find it as a huge All-inclusive game which is something admirable :Dune:

They might add them as DLCs!!

Interesting so I should look for other 4x games then, I would put imperium galactica in this category as well. bookmarked stellaris mentioned by someone.

If you are looking for 4X, you have Stellaris (will ruin your social life), Europa Universalis (4 or 5 I think) (will ruining your entire life), Civilization 6 (social life can be saved), Crusader Kings 3, Endless Legends 2.

The list is (almost) endless.

All of those games have bad combat though... Sins of a solar empire 2 is being worked on.

Try out dune in 2 days for the 1.0 release.

PS: Avoid Paradox Studio 4X grand strategy games they are all sh8t and if you are looking for combat thrill in 4X then look no further because this game is the best of them all. Good luck @chrcoluk :zs_coffee:

Can confirm, I have over 1500 hrs of play in Stellaris, and its not over yet. Have a playset with over forty active mod….this game is insane!!

Does anyone know the time when the 1.0 version will be released on the 14th?

I'll pass judgement as thus, when the game hits version 1.1. Until then, things are up in the air for the most part.

However, I do agree with the tech trees. I feel they are less about researching technology, and more like putting points in trait trees, similar to specializations in World of Warcraft. In which case, should be immediate, rather than researched.
