I think it is obvious that a lot of folks that leave the negative reviews, also never played the previous successful Shiro title, Northgard.
If they had, they would have determined for themselves whether or not they thought the strategic design is for them, or if it is flawed for them... because the strategic design here is drawn directly from the strategic design in Northgard.
Some people love it, some people hate it, it is definitely different.
I wonder if anybody could give an example of a great game (a FUN game, comparable to this one as far as genre) or a good game (again, comparable to this one as far as genre). I will go ahead and do that (as I believe this is a good game... even in its early access state). Ultimately it is a matter of taste, like taste in art or what your favorite flavor of ice cream is. I have never had to watch paint dry... I know that is the cliche expression for describing something that is BORING... as an expression it is about as entertaining and original as watching paint dry.
Great game in the RTS genre: Warcraft III: TFT. Still fun to play, I still play it. I mean, there is just no other RTS game that even comes close. It was (and still likely is depending on your taste) the genre-defining RTS game of all time, spawned numerous other game giants/genres (DOTA, tower-defense, the most popular/successful MMO in history, just three examples), I think there is a large consensus that WCIII:TFT is a GREAT GAME. This early-access title is not there yet and I'm not sure it can even aspire to that. Few games ever have or will.
Good game in the RTS genre: Company of Heroes II. Yep fun, I still play it. Obviously not as good as Warcraft III, but its a different setting, different mechanics. It doesn't aspire to be as epic as Warcraft III, it never will be, but for RTS gameplay in multiplayer, single-player, vs comps, campaign, it does all those modes well. You may not want to play just one RTS title over and over... so this is a good alternate to "the best" ...
Another good game in the RTS genre: Northgard. The Dune:Spice Wars' designers previous title. A lot of folks dislike it, and a lot of folks like it. Like the two previous examples, it has entirely different mechanics... yet it is real-time, and it is strategy, and it is in an entirely different setting. Fun. I still play it.
To not put Dune: Spice Wars in the category of "good RTS" ... a "fun" game to play ... I think is acceptable right now because it just came out in early access... but I personally do put it in the category of good RTS / fun to play RTS titles already. It is as good as Northgard (just my opinion)... and has the potential to filling out into an even better title. Can't guarantee that right now. But if you think Northgard is a good title, you would be getting 20+ hours out of this title, if not more, just playing through the four factions two or three times each using different builds. To me, that is fun. Its mostly fun right now because it is different. Will I want to play this more and those other titles less? Not sure right now. Will have to see how the game develops.
Is it fun? Right now it is. Multiplayer will be fun when I get a little bit better at all the buttons and levers.
Hey I resent that snarky comment. I put about as much effort into my comment as the developers put into this game, maybe more!
an educated man. good for you on liking this game. I personally don't have an attachment to the lore, so it seems that's a stopping point for me.
I think the same common turn-off a lot of folks have with Northgard, which is the randomness of disaster events and having a brutal combination of them happen to you at once, is a reason folks wouldn't care for the game-play in Dune: Spice Wars. It's sort of like a rogue-like in that aspect because it is pretty random. What I think is cool here in Dune: Spice Wars is with the Landsraad vote, it is like a way to vote a good event onto yourself (or everyone) or a bad event on another faction or on everyone. It is just like upping the idea from Northgard into another level, because there is some (though minimal really) player agency in how these events happen. Then there are still also some environmental things that nobody controls, but can mess you up: worms and sandstorms.
Fun is entirely an opinion, not everything that is fun or enjoyable for one person is going to also be for another, so yeah. You may be able to tell I like it a lot so far. And I did play the original Dune II back in the day (early 90's), was one of my favorite games, but if you go back to it now it is just too primitive. It laid ground-work for RTS games, for sure, but I wouldn't play it now. Same with the earlier warcraft games (before III), they were great and ground-breaking when they came out, but so primitive now, I mean that was 30+ years ago. I'm not upset that this version of Dune is far different than that one, I am rather glad it is totally different.
Personally Northguard, which I'm not overly fond of, is thematically better because there are more factions in closer proximity, a more dynamic wild environment, and just more to keep the player occupied while playing. When I played this game, before getting my refund, I had nothing to do. Granted I didn't play more than two hours so was "new", but even so, enemy factions were all miles away with default settings, and all I could do was wait for my building to develop. The combat is also extremely bland. Whereas Northguard's combat wasn't great it was still better than this. The game felt completely empty. Either it's empty or I needed to use the fastforward button, which as a new player feels like is the opposite of what I should be doing. Northguard is a much better game.
If you like the mix of 4X and RTS, then it's a lot of fun. Add bonus points if you're a fan of the setting as well, since I think they did a good job of fitting the faction and councilor play styles into the lore.
Even in EA, the game is decent enough; if you don't like it, don't play it.
So yeah...I want it to be fun, really, I just dont get how :P
Been playing games since I was 8, ranked amongst the top players in competitive mobas, absolutely love strategy games, but in spite of what is an extensive experience playing video games, the reason I don't like this game is not because it sucks and has zero content (granted is in beta), but is because im bad. lmao bro if this isn't satire......
