Dune 2000 > Dune: Spice Wars

Seriously, I have been watching some footage of this and I can't help but feel that Dune 2000 is the superior Dune experience.

...which is kind of sad tbh....

Dune II laid the foundation for all RTS games as we know it. Today, atleast the vanilla, it seems horrible, primitive and archaic and its UI is super clunky in amazing way and yet quite simple (pick exactly one unit then have to choose what will it do), becouse it is.

BUT, even the vanilla still has a unique charm to it, or maybe thats just me, somebody who played as a very young kid, i could not even comprehend english, yet i still knew what to do and how to win and was terrified of any worm sign.

It should be remembered for what it did for the RTS, same for the first Warcraft, C&C, Starcraft, AoE 2, Down of War, Warcraft 3 and many more, all these pushed the ideas and boundaries forward, instead of making copy of what is already here but souless.

I think we can all agree on that.

Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak is a pretty decent modern Dune experience if you're looking for a more traditional RTS action. The only downside is that there are no sand worms.

People complaining how "this is not dune" also happen to complain about having to manage their harvesters from worms, so for that group, its only a plus.

These are some of the longest most detailed postings I've ever seen in a games discussion...I would guess it's because all these armchair generals want what they want instead of just enjoying what Shiro has released early. I like this game...but seriously...I am not qualified to offer suggestions for the game...some guy earlier in the week said this game is solved by a spreadsheet. If that's the case what 4X strategy games do it right? I've been playing this game everyday since it's release. This game hits the highwater mark for my global domination itch...

you are right as well Psylence, the game has a very relaxing and neat engine (something shared with Sins of a Solar Empire in my opinion, another 4X/RTS) and it's always nice to launch a new game in it. Despite seeing every possible mechanic and unit in the first hour of gameplay.

It's just that we are possibly lacking what it could have been.

I guess it's nice to see a resilience of the Dune hardcore fans, defending Dune's legacy, because it proves to publishers it's still there. And we know it's a different game, I guess everyone has come to accept it by now.

As I mentioned elsewhere, people are complaining about "some choices made", things that won't change in EA, but because it's close to EA launch. People are saying things before "they move on". After this, people will move on. In a year the forums will be quite different.

It was the best back in the days. Was in the group of C&C generals and other amazing RTS games. Today. It is still a great RTS, way better than the majority. If you think Dune2000 wasnt a good RTS, dude, you dont even know what a RTS is :p

Please, You became something to laugh.. Dune 2000 was a simple remake on an old redalert engine. It was not with that awesome group of RTS.. and I am playing RTS games since Dune 2.. just do not embress yourself more..

The irony is that Dune 2000 was eviscerated in reviews at release because it was basically a remake of Dune 2 and felt archaic compared to even other Dune games.

Yup, irony thats all. Today Dune2000 is considered one of the best RTS ever made lol.
Today, thousands of games should be "eviscerated" and are praised instead. As you said, irony.

Agreed it is up there as one of the classics. Was it mainstream or as influential as some of the other classic RTS games? No. But I consider it like indie film cult classic of the RTS genre.

Where your villages are on the map make or break your strategy. Ideally you'd want to only have one border to clash over. But with ridges and escarpments the way you move around the board can limit or funnell your moves into certain tracks. Then on top of that the deep desert is nearly impossible to traverse. I like to sit with my back against the edge of the map. To the north or to the south I'll try to protect my investments but not both. Like I said imo my success also depends on the shape of the map.
