now, this game is nothing like Dune2000, different scale, mechanics, and all.... so it's kind of funny when people say one or another is better.... they are not comparable, both are good in their own way.... albeit this one is somewhat lacking even if I have fun, but it has nothing to do with older games.
why spit out your opinion as universal truth?
I shall.
It is a certified hood classic at this point. Few games can be on par with it.
It was a classic RTS game, nostalgia glasses aside.
Yup, irony thats all. Today Dune2000 is considered one of the best RTS ever made lol.
Today, thousands of games should be "eviscerated" and are praised instead. As you said, irony.
Nobody says that, maybe fanboys.. I never heard Dune 2000 as a best even good RTS.. only some dune fans plays it and younger generation who saw Dune 2000 but not Dune 2 just defends or talk about it as it's the last game they saw about Dune..
Emperor would be much better but it's visual problems makes it a chore to play sadly. Emperor may get a remake too and after fixed it's gameplay issues, it would be fantastic..
Cutscenes were of poor quality (except a nice beginning!) and missing near the end; it's as if the further you got, the less cutscenes you got, and the poorer they were too. The harkonnen (rabban vs gunseng) was interesting though. I felt Ordos mentat was out-of-character. Some tracks were good but some others were bad. Too much electric guitar tbh.
Units were 3D, and this lacked identity. Many different units still, which was a plus, but all played in a global mess. Missile fire was excellent and a plus. Pathfinding was horrible.
spice harvesting was autonomous, which is a plus considering this would have been a chore in that game, but also a flaw because it was so unlike dune RTS to just "never bother about it".
Unit control was poor. So poor and wrong that I just had to mass produce, mass click, and almost never bother. It was brainless. I preferred Dune 2 gameplay, before the C&C stuff, but this one needed balance because of very long battles. I still appreciated the C&C cutscenes.
I wish we could have a modernized Dune 2 with pixel art mentats + great text + actor or graphical cutscenes too, and 2D units instead of 3D.
lol what? considered by whom? BY you? definitely not the greatest rts ever made. Gameplay wise starcraft is far better, which people play it to this day.
You are the very first person I've seen said that in last 25 years.
It is grandfather of RTS, but its nowhere near "considered one of the best" at anything.
You have overdozed hard on nostalgia and copium with that statement.
( Herzog Zwei had some RTS elements but was more arcade in its gameplay )
Dune 2000 (which came out 24 years ago) is "only" the C&C remake of Dune 2. It combines the C&C advantages and flaws and the Dune 2 theme and mechanics. C&C was the father of Dune 2000.
Dune 2 predates it, and does everything Dune 2000 does, the few C&C landmarks aside.
If you listen to more Dune fans you are going to hear a lot more people from now.
Because yes it is mentioned as one of the best RTS ever released, like this first answer on google about it from indieretronews.
Myself, as I mentioned elsewhere I replayed all 4 past video games recently. And I felt Dune 2 had the preferrable gameplay experience too. Dune 1 had the best music and I liked Dune 2000 cutscenes though. Emperor had the most unique unit trees. Each had some of its own quality.
But the most balanced experience - battle duration aside - was Dune 2 imho. The most "rewarding" one may be Dune 2000 because of the "cutscenes reward" you got when you progress.
Ad hominem.
Completely different type of game. One is an RTS and one is a 4X. No point in comparison. You might as well say Starcraft 2 is better than this game.
(feeling Dune, experiencing Dune, having a more complete experience over everything, feeling committed to it, having more new experiences in memory, etc I digress)
but on that aspect I think we'll need to wait for campaign / text / story / atmosphere to really judge the rest.
