Imo, Dune always deserved a more 'grand strategy' style of platform. That is how it was originally designed with the very first Dune game, while the later entries always featured some type of "world overview" and the ability to "conquer territories" but none of it was fully realized. It was basically just a gimmick, as the missions themselves were always the same like the the C&C series. Emperor: Battle for Dune being the most ambitious.
I think them doing something like what was done with Northgard is going to fit tremendously well with the Dune universe. They're going to be able to add more layers to the game and be able to pull more elements from the books, like diplomacy/assassinations, rather than using the "C&C style", where each mission is basically the same thing over and over. As in, building a base, massing units and hording the enemy, rinse repeat. This type of gameplay is archaic imo.
I think Dune: Spice Wars is in good hands. I really liked the formula of mixing the "civ-style 4X" mechanics with real-time gameplay and think that the potential of this game formula hasn't been fully tapped into yet.
Also, knowing the Herbert Family and their position of the older Dune games, they'd never give the green light on resurrecting the older games imo. People have asked them for ages to release the older games and/or remaster them. They've had a firm stance on those old games "remaining in the past".
Those older games aren't even on GOG or anything because they don't want them to be, even though people have asked for them for years.
Edit: I also hoped to see this new game be closer to Dune 2000. Wishlisted regardless.
But I can´t recommend Homeworld - Deserts of Kharak. I thought it looks similar to Dune but it lacks basebuilding.
YOU ARE RIGHT!
When I see how many trolls are whining about: why are Atriedies not blue, Harkonnen red, or are there going to be Ordos? However, there was an Ordos House (which was never mentioned in the real saga). It would be interesting to see House Verinus, Richese, or Bene Tlailaxu factions.
If this game will look like Dune 2K or Emperror: Battle for Dune, then I would be a little bit disappointed.
and to me that sounds like, "someone is going to have to seduce Brian, marry him, wait for him to die of old age, and then, after the funeral, announce Dune 3 RTS with FMV directed by Joe Kucan with music by Frank Klepacki and Iron Maiden."
I mean that is just what it sounded like to me.
