It could be used to provide support essentially, not front-line attacker unless you've cleared AA/Manpads in the AO. AT Hellfire missiles/Recon/Paratrooper drop/Supplies/Multi-Laser Targeting for others/In air refueling. Honestly lastly would be using the cannons/miniguns for clearing infantry/buildings but also this cuz it would be fun/cool. Games are meant to be fun/cool!
Would be sick if I could laze a target with AC-130 and use Apache missiles to kill said target. (I can pack an Apache with more Hellfires than an AC-130. Lmao unless they give us "Rapid Dragon" a palletized cruise missile system). Additionally I could use it as bait to kill an enemies top tier fighters with my own lesser fighters. (This would hopefully be a last resort though)
[Throwaway Comment]
Yeah because when I'm playing Warno those damn F-15 eagles keep dying to my AA Kub's when trying to dominate the skies going after a slow af SU-25 AT I have flying behind my lines waiting for an opportunity to strike. Proper AA works both ways.
[Main Point]
As long as you have local AA to threaten the loss of an enemy fighter the trade is balanced or in your favor depending on cost/current value of asset. If I know your troop positions and outfit through recon in a local area or know how much investment you put into a different area I can be more risk taking with the AC-130 even as I move up proper AA or Fly my own fighter to assist with any Fire mission.
If I use the AC-130 as Paratrooper Drop, Supply Drop, or In Air refueling I won't even have to truly endanger it during a match while it provides me with a more rapid & sizable level of ground support.
[Examples]
That lone Tow placement you have is gone, you move up tanks & forget to move AA with them; that gets punished, you send troops in a forested area trying to flank and get spotted your troops will get wiped. If I send a SEED plane in just to spot your AA and use Arty to destroy them next thing I can do is move my AC-130 in to support my infantry during approach.
[Summary]
The AC-130 is Supplies/Recon/Mobility(compared to ground)/Comms(Multi-Laser pod for others)/Firepower
So does a misplaced Apache or Scout Heli, yet no one argues their usefulness. I get it they're more mobile/lower ALT. I still use manpads against them, hell I don't even need to buy an expensive AA missile platform to cover such a wide area. Instead I roll up in a pickup truck strapped with an Anti-Air gun to do the trick.
