In my opinion it does not make sense for AbramsX to be officially adopted as a whole package. A redesign of the turret which will be impossible to upgrade on an old tanks, it will require replacing most of the existing equipment, in which will contribute to a high cost per units for upgrades. There's also a cost of re-train a crews to operate a completely new set of equipment in the turret, new sensors, firing control, new autoloader etc.
The army will probably pick something cheap out of it though, like that dust-reduction side skirt and laser warning system, and put them on an actual Abrams.
Its purpose as a technology demonstrator is to inform the U.S. Army’s development on options for its upcoming M1E3 upgrade that will eventually be designated as the M1A3.
