How do I create a Greater Blood Essence?

I need it to upgrade my Castle Heart and to construct a Servant Coffin. But when I use the Blood Press, the ability to turn 200 blood essence into 1 greater blood essence is locked.

How do I unlock capabilities like this?

Unlock it by killing Tristan. Or you can find and squish unsullied hearts in the blood press.

He's fairly tough so it'll be a while before you can take him on. Unsullied hearts are your best bet for now.

Basically, if you can't track them, they're too tough to fight. As Bomoo said, unsullied hearts will do for now.

Use untainted hearts, works for me and I've not killed tristan

i killed Tristan, i have the recipe unlocked but i cannot craft them. i see a red circle and an X in front of the recipe in the blood press

Click on the X, you have the recipe turned off in the blood press. :D

One note. You need to make an alchemist's room. To learn the form for the flooring, you need a research table and the book on alchemy flooring (often purchasable from the shady book merchants). When you have that and the material needed, you close off a room (I suggest 20X30 for all the alchemy tools you will have) and give it the proper flooring. That cuts your cost on alchemy tasks by 25%, so it goes from 200 blood essences to 150.

You can either use Unsullied Hearts to make Greater Blood Essences, or beat Tristan the Vampire Hunter to unlock a recipe of making it from base Blood Essence. Like everyone here said, though, he's a tough mid-Act II V Blood, so you'll need to up your gear level through the Study or what else you have available.
