With clever use of gems and dash skill + weapon skills, unholy is top.
Bone explosion, same.
Soul Burn, more garbo.
Volatile Arachnid... Eh... Kinda sorta not really... It's circumstantially useful against trash mobs...
Ward of the damned "could be good" if you slap a jewel on it with some extra effects. This is probably the best of the bunch.
Corrupted skull, sorta good? Maybe? Summons are helpful for brief distractions, which can make a difference if you're in a pinch. Pales in comparison to Ward of the damned though.
Summon Fallen Angel: Okay, this is a kinda worth it spell. I've seen the summon do some pretty wicked moves, and smack around some near lvl 70 mobs, for a brief period of time. It can make a difference if used at the right time.
Army of the dead: It's just a summon spell for trash mobs. I guess it's useful for doing a distraction, but it's not going to pull your butt out of the fire anytime soon. Useless against bosses who have aoes, so... Garbo, most of the time.
Veil of Bones: It's okay, not good, but with a jewel, it keeps the spread the condemned status to enemies, if you dash through them, so that's something.
Soul Drinker: This is okay for a passive ability. Not bad... Not great, but not bad. It could be useful when paired up with ward of the damned.
Dark Enchantment: Like above, not great, but since it's a passive, it certainly doesn't hurt. A little less damage taken when you're in a bad spot, helps your chances for survival. So, it's okay.
Corrupted skill does "okay" damage but the summons are the real reason to use it. You can get a jewel that splits the bullets in 2 which (I think) summons 2 skeletons... I'd have to double check cause I just got that one.
Death knight can tank a few hits and lasts a long time with the right jewel.
The ultimate skills for unholy aren't as good as blood lazer or raging tempest, so I would say no to going pure unholy.
(playing on brutal, btw)
Why is Bone Explosion garbage?
It has low damage, but it's an AoE skill, you can hit multiple enemies at once, also it inflicts condemn making them take 15% extra damage, which considerably increases your DPS if you manage to keep an aggressive playstyle.
Corrupted skull and Volatile Arachnid are my Contenders for Best in Slot abilities. Corrupted skull has 2 shots, with a Scholar build its basically never on CD and always ready to cast.. that and having it jeweld for being 2 projectiles and Blowing up skeletons on hit, this thing chunks bosses, and I play on 2.5x HP for bosses (that is double what Brutal gives, Brutal is only 1.25x HP)
Volatile Arachnid is probably the best Ultimate skill in game for damage, bar none.. not only do you increase damage you take, but it wipes V Bloods and Groups of enemies alike.. like, even as a Rogue spec, Arachnids chunk V Bloods HP bar by at least 25% at 2.5x HP. Granted, early on it is weaker cause HP doesnt scale well with low Magic Power.. but at around Merc Iron it really becomes amazing. and by the time you are in Dark Silver and beyond its down right scary.. Note I do run 100% scholar and everything spec'd for Mag dmg and crit.. but still, aside from Void and Ball Lightning combo, these 2 are most always on my bar.. the Ult especially.
Because people have very crazy opinions on what is good and bad. Bone explosion and death knight are both amazing with the right jewels. DK on expire mage +health+damage +whatever extra is amazing. Bone explosion secondary explosion +nova projectiles + damage +whatever extra is amazing too.
Playing brutal and using both of these currently.
Skull is good because it's just. a decent projectile that summons a distraction, does bonus to low health enemies, condemns. Etc.
There's that one unholy ability I forget the name of that Silences enemies, condemns, and heals you. The silence outright prevents enemies from being able to *attack.* which is great if you're overwhelmed.
I haven't used unholy that much this playthrough, I've largely stuck to illusion and I've been dodging boss attacks with the illusion spear, a lotta fun. That's fallen off in some situations where I need the raw damage or something with a block over a dodge.
Comparatively, there's better AOE's to use, lightning, chaos, ice all have effects that can help out casters more than this could, if we're talking aoes. I suppose "if", and that's the key word there "if", you keep up an aggressive play-style, okay, maybe that's something. It wouldn't be my first choice though, but that's just me. This skill is DOA for me.
I can understand the usefulness of Corrupted Skull, as a distraction device, which is why I said it's sorta okay. But if you're in battle against enemies where you need skeletons at all for whatever your reason, I'd still say defer to ward. There's a jewel effect where it can heal you a little while summoning skeletons, and blocking damage all at once. It takes some practice getting used to, but I mean, I get it.
Show me videos of Volatile Arachnid, we've clearly had very different experiences with it. I'd consider giving it another look over, but for all the times I've used it, I'm just not seeing it as anything worth trading out Summon Fallen Angel for.
