What is the white dot left of the equipped gear?

I noticed that you can change appearance of the gear, that one can look like another one when right clicking on the gear when changing colors. Somehow i lost an item that way.
What is the white dot and how do i clear that?

when you open the color palette, there's a space to the left. That's for a piece of equipment to go to make your equipped item look like it. Make sure you don't put your equipped item there or you won't get the stats. Check that slot to make sure you didn't just place it there.

Thank you, it worked. So the item that is shown on the color palette will always be visible as your equipped gear, even if you are wearing nothing. It also uses that item,
so that is where my "lost" gear went. All clear now.
