You can and you can't, this game and its devs are notorious for F'ing the players in the A, when it comes to old save files, castle builds and PVE balance/progression (without having to uh, manually tweak anything yourself in the options.) You can backup your save games though, and set them off to the side so they don't have to play hopscotch between loads/reloads. But as of the recent update, there is some tiny, itty bitty, widdle glimmer of hope, if you could call it that. We're now able to load saves from the immediate previous version of the game (and only that, just so). It doesn't help though with the new content, (again, devs LOVE to F us in the A, they even get off on it, according to one of my players), but it does help preserve access to some of your castles maps without having to do a manual rollback each and every time.

You still lose character progression though.

New update = new world. Simple as that. You can play your old world(s) if you want, but they won't get any of the new features.
There's mod to transfer your castle - kindred schematics or smth like that

A lesson for the devs to consider going forward. You're not the first person to have this concern.

There is an practical tool for transferring "some" of your content to a new save, if you don't mind using mods (I don't often use mods, only for practical purposes is any, but I understand the necessity for quality of life and ease of use features for the player base at large: the game's populace isn't exactly growing at this point). I'd advise you to look into "Kindred Schematics", something the devs could learn more than just a few things from, when it comes to giving players options for "some" of these matters (but not all).

The devs aren't "effing anyone in the A". Really poor choice of words to be honest by the previous commenter who also completely forgot to mention the QoL for players like you. Every time they update the game that requires a new save, the game feels completely different. In addition to that, the devs have implemented a head start for people that don't want to play the whole game again. You can set up your world giving yourself higher tiered equipment to start. They also have pretty in depth sliders to negate any part of the game that feels too grindy. It's definitely worth the play from someone who has restarted a play through every time it was required, since initial early access release.

Maybe stop giving people false information. Not a lesson to the devs, but a lesson to the person who literally persuaded them to not buy the game. lol

Nothing I said was wrong: There have been multiple posts about lost progress, from other individuals as well. I also did mention the possibility of manually tweaking the options in post, and emphasize the possibility of quality of life with aforementioned mod. Devs could put a foot forward for QoL, they have been in the past, but seem to have backed away from this somewhat. I have noticed the amount of patches they've been pushing out since the new edition, lots of fixing up. I suppose in a perfect world, concerns, issues, builds, QoL matters wouldn't be a matter at all.

What do you need your old save for? Chill in the castle? Harass mobs in Mortium? This isn't Grim Dawn where you invest 100h of hours into each character. The game is designed to be replayed, the entire progression system can be done in several hours. You should be happy for being given the incentive to do another playthrough and experience the new game balance.

Well, to be perfectly honest in my humble opinion without being sentimental, of course without offending anyone who thinks differently from my point of view, but also by looking into this matter in distinct perspective and without condemning anyone's view and by trying to make it objectified and by considering each and everyone's valid opinion I honestly believe that I vividly don't have anything to say. But thank you.

This! In every forum, every thread, since the beginning of time. Nothing else matter but this.
